Since my last show, which was two weeks ago, as everybody needs a vacation now and then, the Nuggets have played seven games, so I'll try to run through them as quickly as I can. First, the most terrifying game of the Jokic era. In Miami, it was a tight game at the half, and nobody was expecting anything. There was a push-off in the Nuggets paint. Spencer Jones was pushed toward Nikola Jokic. He stepped on his foot. Nikola's knee bent back a bit. So we spent the next 14 hours or so waiting for Sham Sharania's verdict on the fate of this season. Fortunately, it was just a bone bruise caused by the knee hyperextension, because now we are all orthopedic experts, so the season is still not lost for the Nuggets.
Nobody could blame the shell-shocked team for getting blown out for the rest of that game, as it was the event nobody experienced with Joker so far. Two nights later, on New Year's Eve, the Nuggets were in Toronto, played heroically, despite losing Jonas Valanciunas to another calf injury in the third quarter, led by Jamal Murray and their newest star, Peyton Watson, and won the game that caused a huge sigh of relief for the desperate fan base. Two days later, in Cleveland, Murray and Payton continued putting in numbers, but fell just a bit short. A sign of better things to come was a surprisingly good game from the pianist Zeke Nadji. Next up, an early game in Brooklyn and a first one versus the old friend Michael Porter Jr.
Those two things combined didn't yell letdown only to less experienced Nug Life connoisseurs. Aaron Gordon and Christian Brown returned to the lineup, but it wasn't a glorious comeback for the latter. The whole team played like crap. I turned half the Nuggets Nation against me with a halftime tweet when I called out Jamal Murray for not lifting the team more against a bad Nets team, especially because he was way better in the second half, but the tweet remained. Never live tweet during the games, kids. It's not a smart thing to do. The Nuggets got big numbers from Jamal Payton, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Gordon, but their defense was so pitiful that it wasn't nearly enough. If you are new to the Nuggets experience, this is when you were supposed to expect a big comeback, especially with seven guys out as the team decided to rest Jamal, Tim Hardaway Jr.
and the two returnees Aaron and Christian. Even though the 76ers were on a winning streak, and since this game they won a couple more, the team led by Jalen Pickett, Peyton Watson, Zeke Nagy, and Bruce Brown showed remarkable testicular firmness and won a nail-biter after Joel Embiid goaltended Bruce Brown's game winner. What a treat. Two days later, an even better experience. The humming Boston Celtics and their league-leading offense faced a very stout defense, specifically because the Nuggets' lack of size wasn't a big deal versus Nimiash, Keta, and Luka Garza.
