Chapter 1: What happened in the recent Duke vs. Carolina game?
.
All right. Did you miss us, folks? DBR Bites, episode number 142 coming at you, Jason and Donald. It is, you know, about a little more than 24 hours after we recorded the very, very long episode that was our recap of the Carolina game. The same way the Duke team needs to, you know, as soon as the game is over, change its focus to the next opponent. We are here to do the same.
Is that correct, Donald?
Yeah, I mean, we'll talk one last bit about some stuff that happened at the end of the UNC game, but after that, it's full steam ahead. Pitt is awaiting us, and they're not going to sit back and allow us to wallow in Saturday's defeat. They're going to come and try to right their season, as we'll talk about.
Yes, that is entirely accurate, and we'll be talking ā about the Pitt Panthers in just a moment. But as you said, we want to sort of finish the conversation, so to speak, with some comments from John Shire about the court storming incident that happened.
There has been a lot of folks talking in the media, in the college basketball world, about the court storming that happened at the end of the Duke Carolina game, about John Shire coming in the interview room and very calmly not in an angry kind of way, saying, yeah, member of the team, member of my staff got punched in the face, got assaulted.
The other thing that happened was in the wake of the postgame was former UNC player Theo Pinson saying on video that he had roughed up, that he had taken ā he said, I got a free shot in, saying that he had punched someone on the Duke team. I guess a little unclear if maybe he was the one who punched the ā
member of john shire's staff he might have punched a member of the staff rather than a member of the of the team although theo pinson is now saying i was just joking i was just kidding around Um, I would, I would say that anyone who thinks it's a joke that we should laugh and, and, and poke fun at the fact that, that we committed assaults on an opposing team that was a visitor in our arena.
Not quite sure what, I'm not quite sure what's wrong with you to think that that's funny. That's something to joke about. Ha ha. I committed assault. Ha ha. I tried to start a riot. I mean, what is Theo Pinson even thinking, but he's come out and apologized. So I guess we all just need to move on. Right.

Chapter 2: How does Duke plan to refocus after their loss?
And the fact that UNC's AD came out and apologized in spite of people saying that, oh, this wasn't true, he came out and immediately apologized because he knew it was true. He saw some of the video that you and I have seen, Jason, out there about Bottles being thrown at players and just the overall unsafeness of what happened, not once but twice. It should be noted that UNC was fined for it.
They weren't fined twice. Correct. But they were fined once for it, the $50,000 for a first offense at the ACC happens. And like we kind of talked about, it does not go to Duke. So it's not like we're made whole by this, but it's more of a, hey, at least something happened here.
Yeah, and so like we said, we want to get to John Shire had a news conference earlier today. He, along with all the other ACC basketball coaches, Donald, you were on that news conference, and the very first question that was asked of him was about the court storming and about the condition of the member of the staff.
Let's have a listen really quickly to what John Shire said about how his team was treated and the condition of one of his staffers in the wake of Carolina's assault on the Duke team at the very end of that game.
Yeah, so he's fine. And... He's fine. But after the game... What happened was I came back in the locker room, and I see he's got a bloody lip, and he's disheveled, and he didn't know what happened. He got trampled on the floor. And that was my main concern after the game. That's why I said what I said. And he got ā it was not a good situation. But he's doing better.
He's fine, ready to move on. I don't have anything more to say other than ā That was a very unsafe situation for him, our staff, our families, our players. And I'm a big boy. We can take losing.

Chapter 3: What are the implications of the court storming incident?
Great college game. Carolina played great. But, yeah, he's doing better.
Donald, bloody lip, you know. Dude looks like he lost a fight. But John Shire says he's doing fine now. Yeah, I guess. Are we supposed to put this behind us now? Are we supposed to still be outraged? I don't know. I'm still outraged. I'm mad. I don't know how we're supposed to feel here, dude.
Give me help. Let's put it this way. Let's go to one of my favorite movies, The Replacements. Shane Falco says, Pain hurts, Chig's dick scars, glory lasts forever, and we'll get our glory back in three weeks. I like that. That works.
I guess that works. I mean, cause there's not much I get heated when I talk about.
Yeah, no, it was fair. Right. Because you think about it in this new schedule that we have, this is the one team that we can avenge a loss against, right? Like it's the one team that we're going to see a second time, you know, over the rest of the season.
Well, We already saw Louisville twice, but yeah.
What I'm saying is the rest of the season, the rest of the regular season, I'm sure we'll see ā I bet we see some teams in the postseason that we might have already seen during the regular season, obviously. But this is an opportunity for us to avenge this and not necessarily get our lick back. If you know, you know. But it's about ā
Do it where it hurts, on the scoreboard, in Cameron, on our final game of the season. Hopefully it's a game where we can return the favor on the scoreboard in the loss column and then have the class to walk off the court as we normally do, nobody rushing it and saying, hey, we got our win back.

Chapter 4: What challenges does Pitt face this season?
Now let's focus on the next play.
Well, again, I want to say something. If Duke wins in dramatic fashion in the final seconds, if Duke wins by blowing them out by 30, if people want to rush the floor, I have no problem with that. As long as it's done in a safe way, as long as there is not a threat to the opposing team, let the other team get off the floor. And then do whatever you want. I've got no problem with any of that.
I think it's a ton of fun. I remember doing it when I was in school. But I, you know... I think we just need to make sure everyone is safe because at some point someone's going to get hurt. In fact, in the past, people have been hurt. There, there was an article I was, uh, someone sent me today.
Um, I want to say from 2013 about a high school athlete where someone rushed the floor and this guy was like severely, uh, he was, he was hurt in a way that's going to be permanent for the rest of his life. At some point, something like that is going to happen to a college athlete. And then we're all going to be like, oh, no, this is terrible.
I want to be on the record as saying that I think it's terrible, even though no one's been hurt yet.
Well, I will say, look, if you think that this game won't be scrutinized in three weeks, if something happens, it's going to be scrutinized. I promise you that Duke already has a plan in place. for postgame, even if they know we're not going to rush the court. I don't think there's going to be a situation where we're going to rush the court in any scenario, whether it's a buzzer beater.
Sure, we might go nuts in the crowd, but I promise you, John Shire and the staff is going to be like, hey, let us celebrate, but let's do that in the stands. Let's not give them any reason to come back and say everything that we talked about just now is worth nothing because we did the same thing. They're going to make sure that that's nipped in the bud quickly. Yeah, sure.
If we destroy them or we pummel them or if it's a buzzer beater, Jason ā Yeah, sure, there's going to be celebrations, but they're going to be like, hey, do that outside where we can do it all night long. And I promise you that's going to be the message ahead of a couple weeks. But we still got a lot of basketball to talk about before then.
Yes, so let's get to the Pitt Panthers. Let's get to looking ahead to the next game. I feel sorry for Jeff Capel and Pitt because Duke's probably more than a little bit pissed off about what happened on Saturday. Donald, if I can, before we get into ā pit as a team and what they've done this year. Can I just briefly talk about Jeff Capel just for a little bit? Because I think that this is

Chapter 5: What key players should we watch in the upcoming game against Pitt?
He turned Jalen Lowe into one of the better point guards in college basketball, even though Jalen Lowe has had an injury-filled season for Kentucky this year. The problem is those two guys are no longer in the program. But he again, he's got a pair of nice recruits coming in next year.
A kid named Anthony Felsey, who's like a top 40 recruit who got offers from UCLA and Louisville before he signed with Pitt. But he got another top 40 guy named Chase Foster, who like took visits to Arkansas, Villanova, Texas A&M before picking Pitt. So Capel knows how to find good players. And once they get there, he does a good job of developing them.
They've got a couple of freshmen this year who are looking pretty good. But I just wanted to say, so folks are aware, if you haven't really followed what's going on with Pitt, Jeff Capel's seat a little tiny bit warm. I don't think this year is the year, but he needs to get it done at some point.
It's interesting because, again, it kind of uses the flow into what they've done this year. But he recruits, and we know Jeff Capel. Jeff Capel, playing, coaching, has always had the same demeanor. He's tough. He's tenacious. He wants his guys to play like that, physical, defensively. And that doesn't always translate in college basketball.
It's great to have a bunch of guys who are going to be physical and tenacious and just do the dirty, you know, the dirty work, so to speak. But you need guys who can shoot. You need guys who can score, you know, get buckets. He's had a couple of those guys, but he hasn't had the consistency around the program. And Jason, I think part of that is due to the portal, right?
Like I imagine they were trying to hold on to Jalen Lowe another year. And they just go, yeah, because Kentucky came with a bag and that's going to happen. And I think that's been the slowest part probably to adapt. Sure. He's gotten some guys from the portal, but again, in that mold, he needs to pit needs to figure out a way to help him continue to evolve and
as a recruiter because he ā I mean, look, when he was at Duke, he was the best recruiter, right? He was Coach K's guy. And I think when he left, he took that with him, and we know that he has that in him. But the problem is there's probably a ceiling that Pitt has that Duke doesn't, and that ceiling is way lower than Duke's is. And I think that's what's probably holding him back.
But on the court, Jason, as we translate into what they've done this year, On the court, it's not been great. And this year has probably been the worst in the last five or six years that he's been at Pitt. They're 9-15 this year. They're tied for last in the ACC with a 2-9 conference record. They have top 100 wins against Ohio State and an overtime win in conference against Wake Forest.
But they do have three really bad losses. One to Quinnipiac, who's 208th in Kempom. One to Hofstra, which is 104th. Again, not terrible, but you should beat a Hofstra. And Boston College, who's sitting in the basement with them in the ACC. You can't get up in the standings by losing to teams like Boston College. They're 7-8 at home. The zoo is not the fortress that it used to be.

Chapter 6: How is Duke's three-point shooting affecting their performance?
But as we look at some of the things, this is a quad two game for Duke, 122 in the net, but this is a road game. So it's still a quad two game. But when you look at the metrics, 122 in the net, 101 in Evan Mia, 108 in Ken Palm, and 111 in Torvik. So all of these metrics kind of have them firmly seated among the bottom two or three teams in the ACC.
And Jason, as you get into the metrics, the metrics show why this team has not been performing great on the court.
Yeah. And, you know, you point out that they, you know, that they're struggling in in all the metrics. They've been like they were they were like right around a top 100 team prior to ACC play beginning. And then since they played worse, basically, that's what I'm saying. Since ACC play began. In fact, I kind of just plugged in to Torvik. I plugged in just the ACC season so far.
And they are 131st in the country. You talked about, you know, they're right around 110, somewhere in that kind of ballpark in most of the metrics based on the whole season. But they've been in like in the 130s. since ACC play began. And their ACC record is, as you mentioned, very, very poor. Let's get into some of the other metrics about them just very quickly. Really slow team. They are 337th.
Again, there are 365 teams in Division I. They're 337th in their overall tempo, 350th on offense. Donald, we've talked about the fact that Duke forces teams to play really slow on offense. Pitt's like, yeah, you don't know from really slow. We're already really slow.
Their Bane and Dark Knights are like, I was molded into slow tempo. I was cultivated by it. You just merely embrace the darkness. I live in it. That's Pitt. Exactly.
Exactly.

Chapter 7: What strategies does Duke need to implement against Pitt?
You are going to see the shot clock under 10, under five seconds, I think a pretty fair amount of the time when Pitt has the ball. And their offense, frankly, is not very promising. They shoot just 33% from three-point range, barely 50% on their two-point field goals. Both of those figures are not like ā
outliers they're not like you know bottom hundred in the country but they're basically a little tiny bit below average nationally um they turn the ball over a little bit more than the national average they're a poor free throw shooting team at just 66.7 percent um i'm not sure it matters all that much that they're bad at the free throw line because they're awful awful at getting to the free throw line like they don't hit free throws but at least i don't shoot very many of them
The thing they do best on offense, Donald, is grab missed shots. Their offensive rebounding rate is pretty impressive.
Chapter 8: What are the expectations for the upcoming Duke vs. Pitt game?
It's almost 35%, which is a pretty good number. Good luck with that, Pitt, because Duke is one of the best rebounding teams. We're top 12 defensive rebounding teams in the country. The only thing Pitt does well in offense is grabbing offensive rebounds. But unfortunately, this is a Duke team that just held Carolina to four offensive, like we're a great defensive rebounding team.
So I think that's not a good place for Pitt to sort of be like, this is how we'll get healthy against Duke.
Jason, I'm glad you mentioned the offensive rebounding because when I spoke, when Jeff Capel was on the ACC presser, I got to ask him a question about that. The fact that when you look at these metrics, the only thing that really pops out on offense is that they've been pretty decent at offensive rebounding. And he had a chuckle when I mentioned that.
And here's his answer as to why they've been doing so well on the boards. Thank you. Hey, Coach, good morning. Thank you for your time today. You know, entering Duke, the Duke game tomorrow night, your team has been doing pretty well this year at offensive rebounding, just taking care of the glass. That's obviously going to be a major matchup.
What do you look for in that matchup with your, not just your bigs, but all of your five guys on the floor crashing the boards?
Yeah, well, we miss a lot of shots, so it gives us a chance to rebound, I guess. And Roman Cialepa has been really good at offensive rebounding. But this is a different challenge, again, with their size. Boozer's one of the better rebounders in the country, offensively and defensively. We know that that'll be a point of emphasis for them. Totally understand that.
They have a really good coaching staff, and they do a good job You know, there's so many things that I worry about for this game. You know, we have to be able to score the basketball. We've really struggled the past few games of scoring. And so, you know, we're going to have to be able to make some shots. We're going to have to be able to generate good looks. We have to get back in transition.
We have to try to eliminate easy baskets for them. We have the defensive rebound. That's an area where we've struggled. You know, we really have to do a better job of, you know, in this game of doing that. So, again, they're a very, very talented team. Only have two losses, obviously coming off of a tough loss. And so we know that they'll be loaded for bear and ready to go Tuesday night.
And, you know, hopefully we will, too.
