19 Jan 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 13.91 Unknown

I tell you what, prices are getting high, but a fella still gotta get his guns and ammo. We go hunting for all them good deals online every day. Go to pew.deals, that's P-E-W dot D-E-A-L-S, in your internet. Now back to your podcast.

0

13.93 - 20.099 Loane

Deal Bro! All right, everybody.

0

22.041 - 36.518 Cole

Another episode. As you know, if you've listened to the first few of these, this is like from the Rifle Builders perspective and teaching you guys and gals as purchasers, as people that want to put your own stuff together.

0

37.274 - 64.646 Cole

it's educational right so one of the big things we get asked all the time is lead times right what is yeah what is a lead time and that one's it's kind of a loaded question right it's very loaded question um you look at and i say this you have the issue with like amazon you know of um I get something in two days type thing.

0

64.666 - 78.503 Cole

And I think a lot of people get the idea that they should now get everything in two days. And that's super hard, right? So in Loane's perspective, what is a lead time? Like if you were to call in and I were to give you a lead time, what does it mean?

79.765 - 102.385 Loane

So people, they're wanting to know how long it's going to take, right? So they think the lead time is... it's going to be eight weeks. That's kind of where we're at with lead time. Some, and a lot of things are different, right? Barrels are different. Barreled actions are different. Rifles are different. So it's the amount of time that we can get that barrel in and start working on it.

Chapter 2: What are lead times and why are they important in custom rifle builds?

102.625 - 115.678 Loane

That's what our lead times are kind of referring to. And then it usually takes us maybe two to three weeks to get that finished, put together and out. So that's what our lead times are based off of. How long it's going to take us to get the part in.

0

115.81 - 135.63 Cole

So, but that in lies a bigger issue, right? And not everybody's the same. A bigger shop, you know, I wouldn't say we're a big shop, but we're bigger than some of these mom-paws, you know, that have one person in the shop. And that's, he's just, he's trying to answer the phone. He's trying to do everything. He's trying to make his orders.

0

136.111 - 158.283 Cole

You know, a lot of those guys struggle with trying to make sure stuff gets ordered. And then they, you know, try to machine and they try to do everything else. So, If you're listening, you've also got to take into effect, how big is the shop that you're calling into? Is this shop big enough to carry a whole bunch of stuff? And we've got, I don't know how many different actions.

0

158.303 - 180.097 Cole

We've got a lot of actions. And they're constantly coming in. They're constantly going out. And we try to estimate. Like, hey, I know one of my distributors has these actions in. I can order more. And that is nice that we have the ability to do the sales and the ordering and stuff, but keep the machining side separate. But back to the point of a lot of these little shops don't.

0

180.237 - 198.836 Cole

So they're going home at night and trying to order and hopefully they don't forget type thing. And sometimes they do. But we try to do it to where... I know that I'm going to have that action in a certain time. Now, here's one of the big issues that we've seen with action companies lately, right?

199.297 - 199.397 Loane

Yeah.

199.417 - 208.536 Cole

Because there's been a couple that are like, yep, nine weeks, nine to 14 weeks. And what was the last long, super long action? They told us nine to 14 weeks, and it took how long?

208.957 - 211.562 Loane

I think it was about 15 months.

211.542 - 229.568 Cole

Yeah. The thing is, is we can only control, your gunsmith can only control so much. Right. Now, that also doesn't go to effect that your gunsmith is slacking and they're not placing their orders and everything else. And, you know, a lot of the little shops have a harder time with...

Chapter 3: How do shop size and workload influence delivery times?

412.765 - 428.369 Cole

Here's another issue. And I wouldn't say it's an issue, but it's just something that I'm trying to educate everybody with and learn. somebody tells you it's going to be six to eight weeks and you're calling in three weeks. Yeah. Well, I mean, for you as a salesman, what does that do?

0

428.85 - 443.973 Loane

I mean, that takes my attention away because I'm doing the sales, I'm doing customer service, trying to take care of all these different things. So, I get this coming up and then I'm trying to figure, okay, well now how long has it been? Because I want to make sure I'm responding correctly.

0

444.414 - 464.42 Loane

So that takes time to work on that, to go over when I've got people calling, people needing this for an issue they're having or anything else like that. So it really does take 10, 15 minutes to try and figure out, well, what is this order? How long has it been? What are we looking for? And so why is he already worried about it?

0

464.52 - 472.873 Loane

And I mean, that time could be put to getting more things coming in and being in the future more ready for all of your orders.

0

473.274 - 496.961 Cole

Yeah. And everybody needs to understand, you know, there's hundreds. We literally have hundreds of open orders right now. And we're doing it a lot. So when people are calling in all the time, it takes it away. Now, on the flip side of that, we're not saying, hey, you should never call in. You shouldn't worry about your order at all. We get you're excited, 100%. We get you're super amped up.

496.981 - 515.261 Cole

You want to go shoot. You want to go show your buddies your new rig, everything else. What we're merely stating is be patient, please. These aren't an OEM that you can go buy a whole bunch of them. These are products that are built to order. We don't have a whole bunch of stuff sitting on the shelf.

515.341 - 533.858 Cole

One thing we've really helped is we've started trying to order excess of everything so the lead times are down. But again, that costs money. We've got probably well over $100,000 in actions and barrels right now sitting on the shelf. To try and get to that point, right?

533.878 - 555.726 Loane

Which also, the hardest thing of doing that is, okay, what calibers are people going to buy? Everything else. It's hard to really identify what barrels we need in because there's a popular caliber. And one time we'll sell 15.65 Creedmoors and then we'll sell them for another... two months, but then all of a sudden it's six Creed Mords and 22.

555.786 - 573.065 Loane

So we've really got to bridge that gap to where we're not sure exactly what everybody's going to want. So putting too much stock and then we're sitting on it for six months, all these barrels and you know, that's money that we're not able to move on and keep things working faster for you guys.

Chapter 4: What factors impact lead times in custom rifle building?

770.752 - 794.375 Loane

They've been busy. They really have. And they've been open with us, talking with us. Really great to work with, to let us know, hey, this is where we're at. We're busy. These are going to be the times. So... That's kind of where they're sitting at. Now, for carbon, though, it's over a year to get those. And with the Mod 400 BB, we just... They're definitely a year plus.

0

794.476 - 814.394 Loane

It's just really hard to get those done for them. CRB, we're generally around three to six months on those barrels, which is stainless steel. And barreled actions, that usually takes us to the 12 to 14 week range as well. Because a lot of the times it's waiting for the carbon barrel. If you do carbon, sometimes it's getting the action.

0

814.434 - 832.873 Loane

And especially if it's something that's not on our regular carried, like if you call in, we do an invoice. We get something that we don't normally buy. definitely the lead times are going to be longer. Now, if it's stuff we have in stock, like the Black Rain Derricos, and we have the barrel here, you're going to be about four to five weeks right now.

0

833.414 - 849.614 Loane

Just the load, like Cole said, we had a lot of orders. So the shelf's really stacked full of orders to get filled. It's just putting a lot of time on the machine shop right now. So that's about where we're at with those. And full builder rifles, you can usually expect around three to five months.

0

850.715 - 850.855

Mm-hmm.

850.987 - 869.409 Cole

And one thing we've done very hard here is we always try to, you know, tell somebody we over-promise or, you know, under-promise, over-deliver. So sometimes we tell somebody, hey, it'll be 12 weeks and we deliver it in three. You know, that's what we'd really like to do. I think anybody would like to do that. We do that a lot.

869.429 - 890.207 Cole

A lot of people will get the call from our shipping department like, holy crap, you told me it was going to be like another six weeks. We're like, well, which one would you rather have? No, we want this. We like this. We've been really working, but that also doesn't mean that's going to be everybody. So I guess the big takeaways from this is, first off, understand what you want when you call in.

890.187 - 901.581 Cole

Help us, you know, try to get you, you know, maybe we can talk you into or work with you on, oh, you, you, this is kind of what you want, but I can get this a little bit faster type thing.

901.662 - 924.818 Loane

Like a big thing with heavy Palmas that we've talked about quite a bit this time is we're usually going to call you up, say, okay, you know, I got an M24, which that one's a straight contour instead of the swoop after the chamber. It's the same weight, basically the same barrel. The thing is, is know what your barrel channel is going to be in your stock as well, just to make sure.

Chapter 5: How do stainless and carbon barrels affect lead times?

965.379 - 989.097 Cole

And that's just things that people don't see. We're trying to do to make everybody happy. I think we've come a long ways in the last couple of years on trying to do this, but understand that the smaller gun shops, it's going to be a little bit more difficult. Some of them are working a full-time job doing this on the side. Some of them are, you know, they're way behind.

0

989.137 - 1009.364 Cole

They've got a lot of people calling in. That's why a lot of them don't answer the phone all the time. You got to leave a message because they're on the machine machining or they're trying to get their backlog done or anything else. So just understand, you know, be patient. I was talking to a real good friend of mine. He's got a small shop. He's done a little bit of work for me over the years.

0

1009.384 - 1028.768 Cole

And he goes, man, I sold these projects to this guy. And I told him, you know, it'll be six to seven months. And he's calling me in a month. Hey, where is this? You know, I get it. You're excited. Be patient. You know, if they tell you six to seven months, you agree to it? No. Hey, there's going to be six to seven months.

0

1029.524 - 1048.218 Loane

But also allow that extra time because you don't know what's going to happen. He might have some family stuff come up, might have to go away. And so he's going to be gone another week, maybe two weeks. So many things can interfere with the lead time that it's just... And they are trying to get it out to you. They are working hard.

0

1048.238 - 1069.261 Loane

Like Cole said, if it's a one-man band, I mean, they got so much stuff they're doing. If you know they're worth it, you'll be patient. I mean, because I'm the same way. I'm an impatient guy myself. So it's one of those things that it's just, it's a learned thing and it's worth it. When you get these barrels, everyone that, even some of the guys are like calling up three weeks later.

1070.283 - 1077.393 Loane

When they call me back after they got it, man, this was worth it. It just works great. It shoots so good. So it is going to be worth it.

1077.413 - 1094.698 Cole

Mm-hmm. It's like anything, you know, somebody's detailing your car, you don't want to jump on them and try to push them through it so they miss things. You know, be patient. Understand that the worth is weight, the reward type, you know. And there's still a lot of companies out there that are telling people a year plus on a full build rifle.

1094.678 - 1118.761 Cole

And, you know, some of these guys are just so meticulous that it takes them a long time to go through it and understand. And I really like how you brought that up, you know, know that they're trying to do their best and they're trying to get it done. But there's another flip side to that as well. If you get told something, and I've seen this more and more.

1118.821 - 1137.546 Cole

We've had a lot of people call us, and there's a few companies that we know of. And we're not going to say it. We're not going to go down this road. They'll promise something. And then it goes to the lead time. And then somebody calls them. Oh, yeah, a few more weeks. And then they call them a few more weeks. And this just keeps happening after a year.

Chapter 6: What common mistakes do customers make regarding lead times?

1313.459 - 1314.14 Cole

You got anything else?

0

1315.162 - 1333.897 Loane

Yeah, I think our product speaks for itself once you do get it. You know what I mean? It's just, you know, and a lot of people, sometimes they'll get me because I do general terms, lead times about, you know, we're from here to there. often and this and that. And that does frustrate a couple of people, not very many.

0

Chapter 7: What should customers understand about estimated lead times?

1333.917 - 1356.012 Loane

I wished I could tell you this is going to be six weeks and it'll be there. I really do. But I just can't always guarantee that. So I give ourselves that little bit of wide berth to know that there could be something shifting us this way that takes us out longer. And for the most part, everything we send out is usually a lot faster than what the lead times we have posted.

0

1356.593 - 1381.395 Cole

Mm-hmm. Yep, and that's the way we want to stay. Absolutely. Hopefully we stay there, and hopefully machines don't break, and hopefully Biden never comes back, you know, that type of thing. But we appreciate you watching, listening. We're trying to do more of these. If you have questions, email us. If you have podcasts that you'd like us to talk on something about, let us know.
