Hi, I'm Sonia. And I'm Carrie. We met in Los Angeles over 15 years ago as personal chefs and haven't stopped talking about food since. We're so glad you're here.
Hi Carrie.
Hi Sonia.
What could be more fun than summer berries?
Almost nothing, I think. This is one of my favorite things to talk to you about because I love berries, but I think your palpable excitement about berries is something that I noticed when we became friends and started talking about food. When I think about berries and I think about you and I think about Portland, I still think about eating our way through Portland because it's like there are just berries on every corner in the summer. Really am excited by the
Every and all berries. And maybe it's because our season is shorter. In California, you can get strawberries so many more months of the years. You can get all the berries really almost all year round. And here it really is a short season. The reward of a truly ripe in-season berry is like few other ingredients, and you don't have to do much to make them taste good.
As a Midwesterner, we all made it through the winter and we made it through the spring. There are those days when you're really trying to conjure warm weather and you're wearing short sleeves when you really shouldn't be. And there is that excitement that makes sense. And, you know, after 20 plus years in Los Angeles, I've sort of lost the thread on that. There is still such excitement when you go to the farmer's market. it and there are those special berries that you're not used to seeing like in the summer when I see mulberries, I just buy some and walk around the market and eat them.
I have to say because the walking around the market eating berries is something you taught me to do, really. Like I don't know why it never occurred to me to do that, but now every time I get berries, I start eating them at the market itself and I always think of you when I do.
Well, when I was a personal chef, my friend Clements she would put her baby in a wagon and go through the market, and she would buy many flats of berries. And her son would eat, I think at least like forty dollars worth of berries, and he would have them smashed all over his face. And so I used to think to myself, like, oh, if I have a child, I will bring my child to the farmer's market and let them eat berries and smash them all over their face. And it was just so fun to do that with Mac when he was really little and to teach children about the magic of something that it really is fleeting.
One of my favorite childhood photos of myself is my face covered in cherries. Yeah. Just that that joy of something that's really limited. And that's actually a perfect segue into the first berry dessert I have to share with you. It's something I just recently made because what happens when the truly first good strawberries emerge is one, I just want to eat pints of them at the market, like you've taught me to do. And then I also want to do something with them fresh.
