So Chuck, um I'm sure you're as surprised as I am this afternoon with the news that came through, and I'm assuming you were watching his first ball uh after the retirement broke with the crowd going berserk.

Um so I think just tell us how you felt firstly, when you tell us where you were, how you felt, and just through those sort of early moments of realising that today was the final day of Stokes' career.
Yeah, about uh five to three this afternoon, uh the Sky Commentary box got a a a sort of a note basically saying Three o'clock. England in Instagram or social media accounts. We're gonna post a video. Of Ben Stokes. Announcing his retirement to the team this morning. So I was like, Oh my gosh, okay, right. So our producer, uh Reaver, said, Right, Brody, I want you on air um when this news breaks. So I sort of come into the commentary box and then we're waiting and I'm just I think I did about eleven percent battery on my iPhone just refreshing, like, where's this post? Where's this post? It's not come, it's not come. Uh and then after twenty minutes we we got a note saying, Okay, three twenty-five. this note is coming.
So I was on with Mike Atherton and just a ticker came up at the bottom of of Sky Sports Cricket after they'd posted that Instagram account saying Ben Stokes is is retiring from international cricket. So Michael Atherton announced that on Sky and actually at Test matches, for those that don't know or haven't been, there's a lot of people wear the earpieces. Uh so they listen to the commentary.
What emotions did Broad feel watching Stokes take a wicket right after announcing his retirement?
So People would have heard that and maybe said to people around them or checked their phone and seen social media. So then Ben Stokes is bowling the next over. Two or three balls later after the announcement, and the crowd all get on their feet and roar and cheer and up they get. And he runs in, bowls one outside off stump, in only the way these great all rounders or great cricketers seem to do, that that moment he's in his eleventh over of the spell, that moment he announces retirement, the next ball, he takes a wicket, caught second slip from Harry Brook, and and You know, I I I felt very emotional myself. He ran off celebrating, the team went berserk, the the crowd went berserk. a and I must admit there were times where I felt like I was gonna have a little cry but um yeah uh emotional day.
Uh I don't think it's fully sunk in that we won't see him in an England shirt ever again. Uh true warrior of the game. Um, but everything comes to an end.
