There is no Ben Stokes as captain and no Gus Atkinson. They have been left out of the test match squad. They have been replaced by Joffra Archer and Jordan Cox. They're the only changes in the squad. I've written myself a couple of notes on my phone just to sort of bounce around, really. What's my initial reaction to that? Uh after Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson missed the curfew on the early hours of Monday morning. There was an incident with a young Saracens rugby player that Gus Atkinson and a security officer was involved in. Don't think Ben Stokes was near that incident, but his crime, so to speak, is missing the curfew.
I'm unsurprised that they've been left out of this test match squad. The curfew is is there. Rightly or wrongly, we'll discuss that a little bit. Bit more uh during this show. Um I I think they had to be left out this test match God while the ECB, while the regulators uh gather information on what happened, uh on the reasonings um and really understand the situation. Look, the ECB are not new to situations like this, as recent as Harry Brooke in New Zealand, where they they tried to sort of cover it up, I suppose, and it It got out and then you're in much worse situation and scenario. So I'm unsurprised that those two have been left out of the test match squad. And actually I think it's a a really wise move to make Joe Root captain, interim captain.
I think if you made Harry Brook, who's the vice captain, captain for these this test match at the Oval, it's another story. It's another, well he didn't miss any cricket for for his instant. With the bouncer in New Zealand, Joe, you're in very safe hands. He's been captain before, he's England's most successful captain with the amount of wins. Um, he will do the job, he knows it's an interim basis, uh, he knows he can answer press questions that are going to come around sensibly, and it just Dowce is the the flames on another story with with Harry Brook being a captain replacing Ben Stokes. So uh from what I understand at the moment it's a it's a one test match ban and and we will cross the bridge of Trent Bridge when we come to it.
But uh that is the news. It's it's obviously big news with England captain missing a test match along with a bowl that's just taken five for thirty. But uh I I think breaching the curfew um the E C B were left with with no option, uh I have to say on the curfew. I played for England for 17 years. I had times with a curfew, I had times without a curfew. My genuine belief is there should be no need for a curfew. I don't understand when that curfew should be in place. It's a midnight curfew that you have to be back in your hotel by then. Does that mean that is after a test match win? I I think it'd be very unlikely players would be out during a test match or before. An ODI, obviously it has happened, it's past twelve.
