Stocks are mixed this morning. The Dow is up 259 points on pace for another record high close. The Nasdaq, though, is down 42 points. The S&P 500 gaining 11. The price of oil is down a half dollar, still around 64 bucks a barrel. Gas is up another penny, continuing a trend that has regular 15 cents higher than a month ago. But AAA's national average, 294 per gallon, is still 20 cents less than a year ago. Speaking of oil, Energy Secretary Chris White has gone to Venezuela within a month after the U.S. operation that removed leader Nicolas Maduro.
But I bring today a message from President Trump. He is passionately committed to absolutely transforming the relationship between the United States and Venezuela. Wright says he wanted to see firsthand the state of Venezuela's oil industry. His visit follows last month's enactment of a Venezuelan law that opened the nation's oil sector to private investment, reversing more than two decades of socialist policy, leading to 8 million people fleeing the country. Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves.

Fewer people filed for unemployment benefits at the start of February. The number of new claims declined by 5,000 to 227,000 in the week ending February 7th. Claims have been holding in a range, suggesting many employers have not been conducting large-scale layoffs. More people remained on benefits at the end of January, though. The number of continuing claims for the week ending January 31st rose by 21,000 to 1.86 million.
