Chapter 2: How is President Trump responding to the conflict with Iran?
The Pakistani man accused of plotting an assassination of President Trump was found guilty Friday and is now awaiting sentencing.
It took a federal jury less than two hours to find 47 year old Asif Merchant guilty of murder for hire and attempting to commit terrorism. Prosecutors said he traveled here from Pakistan with a plan to kill President Trump at a campaign rally. He says that that plan was backed by the Iranian regime.
Merchant was arrested one day prior to the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Thomas Crooks attempted to assassinate Trump, telling an FBI agent that he was assassinated. He was here for the same thing. During the trial, Merchant testified in his own defense, telling the jury he had no choice but to go along with the IRGC mission to kill U.S. politicians or his family would be harmed.
And prosecutors say Merchant tried to hire two hitmen, even paying them $5,000, but the supposed killers were actually federal agents.
