We're under an ice storm morning through Sunday night with three-quarters of an inch of ice or more in the forecast. Here in Oxford, the general manager of Oxford Utilities tells me residents need to prepare for the possibility of power outages.
With the recent prediction and forecast, I'm very concerned when we start talking about over three quarters of an inch of ice just due to the accumulation on the lines and on the trees, possible tree failures or pole failures and just widespread outages throughout our system. Chapter 2: How are states responding to the winter storm emergency?
We know when we have this much snow, we have more accidents on the road. Sometimes these are fatal accidents. We also know that with a temperature this low, it can be a very, very dangerous situation for anyone who is out.
More than 8,000 flights have been canceled through Sunday due to the storm system. Disruptions are ongoing at U.S. airports as this massive winter storm brings snow, ice, and frigid temperatures.
So far, 10,000-plus U.S. flights have been disrupted. More than 6,500 canceled through Sunday, with another 3,600 being delayed. But that number is expected to surpass 15,000 when all is said and done.
Chapter 3: What impact is the winter storm having on air travel?
With airports from New Mexico to New England preparing... emergency measures, travelers are trying to remain stoic so far. More Americans than not are under some type of weather alert. And at least 17 states have already declared a state of emergency.
