What is the current status of the government shutdown?
Another shutdown. I'm Deborah Valentine, Fox News. A partial government shutdown's underway despite the Senate passing a spending deal Democrats and President Trump had agreed to earlier this week. Fox's Chad Pergram explains from Capitol Hill.
It is a partial shutdown. That's because the Senate changed what the House passed last week. The Senate approved five spending bills, but Democrats insisted on holding up the DHS bill. They wanted changes at ICE. The Senate broke off the DHS bill and sent the rest of the package back to the House. That triggers a shutdown until at least Monday night.
Now, House Speaker Mike Johnson implored Republicans to vote yes on Monday. That would end the shutdown after 70 hours. But DHS is only funded for two weeks.
It's unclear how many House members will support the revised package. The spending package also includes funding for the Department of State, Health and Human Services, Transportation and Housing and Urban Development, among others. President Trump picks a new nominee to head the Federal Reserve.
President Trump nominating his new Fed chair, former Fed Governor Kevin Walsh, without a commitment to cut interest rates, despite the pressure campaign to do just that on his soon-to-be predecessor, Jerome Powell. I don't want to ask him that question. I think it's inappropriate, probably. Probably would be allowed, but I want to keep it nice and pure. But he certainly wants to cut rates.
I've been watching him for a long time. Warsh got the job despite his own hawkish history of rate hikes in the wake of the 2008 housing crisis. The president says it shouldn't be a problem.
Getting Warsh into position got one vote harder with Republican Senator Tom Tillis withholding his support, saying, quote, the Department of Justice continues to pursue a criminal investigation that no reasonable person could construe as possessing criminal intent.
