The U.S. F-15E was shot down late Thursday night while it was still dark before the sun rose on Friday morning in Iran.
Chapter 2: How is Israel involved in the rescue operation?
U.S. officials tell me there was enemy fire during the rescue of one of the two F-15E crew members, and there is a very risky search and rescue operation still ongoing right now. Video from Iran appears to show one of the American rescue helicopters being hit by enemy fire, black smoke coming off of its tail. An F-15E Strike Eagle has a pilot and a weapons systems operator on board.
It is the workhorse of the Air Force.
