President Donald Trump said the joint airstrikes with Israel aim to end a decades-long threat from Iran and ensure it could not develop a nuclear weapon.
The strikes targeted Iranian military and government sites, and this operation is likely to continue for as long as necessary, Trump says. In response, Iran launched attacks throughout the Middle East on U.S.

Lawmakers are reacting to the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran that killed the country's supreme leader. Fox's Bill Malujan is in Washington with the latest.
Reaction has been pouring in from Congress, and for the most part, Republicans are praising the strikes while Democrats are condemning them. But at least one Republican announced his opposition to the strikes. That would be Congressman Thomas Massey. He posted, quote, I'm opposed to this war. This is not America first.
When Congress reconvenes, I will work with Congressman Ro Khanna to force a congressional vote on war with Iran.
Chapter 5: What actions is the FBI taking in response to the situation in Iran?
Meanwhile, Senator John Fetterman once again breaking from his party, saying he supports President Trump's attack on Iran. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer now calling for Congress to return to the Hill immediately to vote on a war powers resolution on Iran to limit Trump's authority. Now, all of this happening in the context of a middle of a DHS shutdown.
The Department of Homeland Security remains in that partial shutdown as portions of its funding are yet to be approved by Congress, while lawmakers negotiate differences over ICE and other federal agencies. The FBI escalates its domestic alert after strikes in Iran. Fox's Carmen Roberts has more on the director's orders.
FBI Director Kash Patel puts the bureau's counterterrorism and intelligence teams on high alert as U.S. military operations against Iran continue. Patel posted on X that joint terrorism task forces nationwide are working around the clock to disrupt any potential threats to the homeland while the military handles force protection overseas.
A law enforcement source says the heightened posture typically includes increased surveillance and intelligence gathering.
