Terry Pitchford was 18 years old when participating in a robbery of a Mississippi convenience store in 2004, resulting in the killing of the store owner. The accomplice fired the killing shot. But then prosecutor Doug Evans struck all but one of the jury picks who were black.
Pitchford's lawyers objected, accusing Evans of bias, but the judge allowed the trial to continue with only one black juror in a county where 40% of residents were African American. Pitchford himself is black and was convicted and sentenced to die. Pitchford's lawyers are asking the Supreme Court to force a new trial.
