Hello and welcome to Friends That Invest. You're joined today by your host, Sim. I'm a financial author and investor, and I'm here to help you learn about all things investing and personal finance. Now, in today's episode, I am breaking down the biggest question that so many investors in our community have. There goes Sim. Should I enjoy life right now or should I sacrifice it for a better life in the future? What if the future doesn't even come? Shouldn't I enjoy what's going on right now? But also, I don't want to not have a home in the future. I don't want to be stressed out in retirement when I'm older. It is just so overwhelming. What do I do? And so I decided to put together this framework that I personally use and share it with you so that you can have more of a clearer understanding of where you stand, so to speak.

But before I do, I just want to say that guys, I have been loving listening to podcasts again, like I think I was over-indexing on trying to be productive where I would listen to productivity podcasts. I mean, you're kind of doing it right now, aren't you? I'd listen to productivity podcasts or podcasts about growing your business or podcasts about money. I was reading books about money and growing your business. And I was just so over it. And I started listening again to Celebrity Memoir Book Club. They've been rebranded to Good Noticing. So it's just like... I feel good. Don't have to think about it. Pop culture podcast. And I've been listening to giggly squad, like just girls talking about random things.
Sim 2:15
And I've been reading like fiction books and it is just so good to get out of the productivity, like death trap hands to wheel and, So after this episode, please go and don't listen to another episode by me. Don't learn about how to manage your money better. Go listen to a fun episode. Go have some fun. It's on me. Honestly, it is productive to not have to think about money all the time. But I digress. My framework can be kind of broken down into four quadrants.

How does Sim introduce the spending vs saving question?

Sim 2:47
And this is my framework that I use to figure out how much of life I can enjoy now. There's how much to put away. And one of the reasons I brought this up is I was chatting to a friend of mine and her and I have both built businesses. And so we both have the ability to maybe pull out more cash from our businesses and And yet we've chosen not to. And she and I were saying like, yes, we could like buy a nicer car or live in a nicer home. But then she said, well, Sim, if I buy a nicer car, then I have to, I want like a nicer house. And then, then there's all the costs associated with the house. And it's just like a never ending cycle. And therefore I should probably just keep living and like you know, the more smaller home that I'm in and just drive the normal car that I have.
Sim 3:37
But at what point do I start enjoying my life? And I really related to that because for so long I've been operating in a very similar way. So what you're going to do is you are going to make four boxes. And in your four boxes, you're going to say on the two boxes on the right, it's gonna be something that is expensive and for current you. The bottom box on the right is gonna be something that is cheap for current you. The top box on the left is gonna be things that are expensive for future you. And the bottom box on the left is gonna be things that are cheap and for current you. And so if you know those like cross diagrams, basically you've got expensive and cheap on the Y-axis, expensive on the top, cheap on the bottom, and then left to right, you've got for current you and for future you.
