What is Dr. Peter Gray’s new book “Restoring Childhood” about and why did he write it?
I'm Debbie Reber, and this is Full Tilt Parenting. I'm really excited to share this one today. I had the chance to sit down with renowned developmental psychologist, Dr. Peter Gray, who has a new book out today as this episode drops that I just loved. It's called Restoring Childhood, How to Set Kids Free in the Age of Anxiety. So Peter's new book challenges one of the dominant narratives about the youth mental health crisis that smartphones and social media are largely to blame for the rise in anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges in kids. Peter argues that this picture is incomplete and that when we look more closely at the data and what has changed in childhood over the past few decades, a very different story emerges.
So for this conversation, we will dig into what Peter believes we're missing when we focus so much attention on screens. Peter also will share practical ideas for giving our kids more freedom to build confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of agency. Peter is a research professor of psychology and neuroscience at Boston College, whose work focuses on children's natural ways of learning and the lifelong value of play. He's also the author of Free to Learn. Why unleashing the instinct to play will make our children happier, more self-reliant, and better students for life. This was one of those conversations I didn't want to end. It was really fascinating. I know it's going to give you a lot to think about.
Two quick housekeeping items before we get to the show. First, all of my free Tilt Parenting resources, my mini courses, the resource vault, the school database, they now live in the new Differently Wired Family Hub. You can get access at tiltparenting.com slash hub. Also, if you'd rather watch this podcast, including today's chat with Peter, you can find videos of all my conversations on the Full Tilt Parenting YouTube channel. And when you're there, please subscribe. It really helps more people who need these conversations find them. Oh, and just a quick heads up. This episode includes a couple of brief references to stats about youth suicide and suicidality. Alrighty, here is my episode with Dr. Peter Gray.
Hey, Peter, welcome to the podcast.
I'm happy to be here. Thank you for inviting me.
Oh my goodness. I was so pleased and excited when I heard from your publicist about your new book and asked if I would be interested in bringing you onto the show. I said yes before I even got a copy of your book. So I'm super excited to just have this opportunity to connect with you. You have a brand new book out. It's called Restoring Childhood, How to Set Kids Free in the Age of Anxiety. I'd love to start there. Could you tell us about why this book was so important for you to get out into the world?
I think this is an issue that should be important to everybody who's concerned about kids and about the future. Kids, certainly in the United States, but in many other parts of the world, are suffering at extraordinarily high rates of anxiety, depression, anxiety. even suicide, just the tip of the iceberg of mental suffering, if you will. I've seen this increase in anxiety, depression among young people throughout my lifetime. This is not a more resistant to allowing children to do the things that they need to do to develop good mental health, to develop the attitudes and abilities, a sense of agency that is required to to feel confident, to feel that I can handle problems, my future's gonna be okay because I can do things.
That I've seen this change, I'm not the only person who's documented, there are historians who've documented, the decline in children's freedom to play and explore and do other things independently of direct adult control. And so that's fundamentally what this book is about. When I say restoring childhood, the first question that might come to somebody's mind is, well, what do I mean by childhood? So what I mean by childhood is what I call a normal childhood, which is a period of time in which young people are increasingly taking control of their own lives.
