Our story takes place in ancient Egypt. In the year fifty BCE. By this point. The Empire is three thousand years old with a highly advanced culture. This particular period is known as the Ptolemaic Kingdom. It's the final chapter in Egypt's empire. On the throne is the last pharaoh. And perhaps the most famous. Queen Cleopatra She'll rule Egypt for 21 years, from 51 to 30 BCE. Immortalized in fiction. Cleopatra will often be remembered for her romantic affairs. First with Julius Caesar and then with Mark Antony. But the real Cleopatra is far more complex. A hard working strategic leader. She is brave and intelligent. Her rule over Egypt will leave a lasting legacy. Let's join her now in fifty BCE. Just a year into her reign.

We'll follow the nineteen year old Cleopatra as she goes about her day. Waking in her palace in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. She sleeps in a four poster bed. Positioned against the wall of her luxurious bedroom. A veil of linen hangs around the bedposts. Swaying in the breeze from the nearby balcony. At a glance, the veil looks turquoise. But when it catches the sunlight.
