Today is the day that I actually make my first investment. I have spent months learning how to do this, working on my mindset, building a budget, setting goals, understanding ETFs and choosing an investment platform. But I haven't actually put any money into the market yet until now.

Hello and welcome back to Get Started Investing, a show that helps you make the most of your money. I'm Jess and in this series, I'm getting invested from scratch. Today's the day I actually take that next step and put my money where my mouth is. Bryce and Alec are going to join me. I'll be walking them through exactly where I'm at. What I'm investing in, how much, and they actually have no idea what I've gone with, so I'm very, very keen to see what they actually think. But before we get into it, very exciting announcement.
How did Jess prepare mentally and financially before making her first investment?

Bryce and Alec, welcome to Get Started Investing.
Good to be here, Jess. Good to be back.
It's good to have you back. It's been quite a ride over the last, what, six, seven weeks. So I thought today would be a really good chance to update you on where things are at from since when we last spoke.
Yeah, well, we've been following the journey and it's great to hear. It's great to hear that we're getting to the investing stage as well. Yeah. Yeah, me too. Yeah, yeah.
So when I first came to you with the idea, I was like, cool, I've got some extra money, let's get investing. But actually peeling it back a few layers and figuring things out has actually been really, really helpful and relevant. So started with Glen James, sorting my money and budgeting out, which is really good because, as you know, I didn't have anything. Yeah. After that, I spoke with Glenn Hare and we talked about like how to set goals. I have goals now, Bryce.
Nice, nice. Well, I remember in the first episode we did, you just had two sort of accounts.
Yeah, yeah.
And one had your savings in it that you thought maybe or maybe not be your emergency fund or whatever. Yeah. So have you tightened that up?
Everything's tight. So I've got two different banks. I've got all different bank accounts, different buckets. I've got the emergency fund. Glenn James said my financial house was not on fire.
Good.
So that was good.
Yeah, yeah, that's good. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, the amount that you've realized you could invest is a meaningful amount.
Yeah, and that's why it was really good to follow that with actually speaking to Glenn who was like, okay, What are your goals? Like you need to know what you're doing with this surplus income. What was super helpful was like giving each bit of my money a bucket and its own job. He advised me to split it between super investing and saving. And we talked about like how to do that. He advised like a thousand, a thousand, a thousand. I have done my own research on my own accord. And so I'm going to be doing a thousand dollars into savings. I'm still going to keep that.
Is this monthly or fortnightly?
Monthly. Yeah.
And do you have a specific thing you're saving for?
Yeah, so he really helped me understand that because I couldn't give him certain answers in terms of what the next five years looks like for me.
