Nice.
Probably the only person that will listen to my advice.
An IPO is an acronym for initial public offering.
It's when a private company for the very first time sells a portion of its shares to the public and then it is listed on the stock exchange so that then from that point on it becomes a publicly traded company.
The main reason is they do it to raise money.
If we use SpaceX as the example, because that's the most current, it's the biggest IPO in history.
And one of the reasons it's the biggest is because they went to list and tried to raise $75 billion from new investors.
So listing on the stock exchange is a way for companies to raise money.
That's the primary reason companies list.
SpaceX was a private company for many years.
It was raising capital from private investors, but it got to a point where it needed to raise so much money, $75 billion, that they said we need to list on the stock exchange so that we can raise $75 billion because there's not enough money in the private markets.
So Musk, I think he owns about 40%.
And this applies to all startup companies.
So all small companies, you start out and the founders might own 100%.
And then they go to get to the next leg of growth.
We need to issue more shares and raise money from investors.
And so you might issue more shares and then continuously raise money in the private markets.
Just I go to you as an investor, Jess, I want a million dollars and I'll give you some stock.
But then it gets to a point where they need so much money that they need to go to the public markets because the public markets, you have all these big fund managers, you have retail investors who can provide capital that wouldn't be able to do it in the private market.
Exactly.
