Hey, welcome back to Get Started Investing. For those joining for the first time, I'm Jess. And although I've worked in the finance industry for nearly a decade, I've actually never invested myself. So I thought what better way to get started than documenting my entire investing journey from scratch while you come along for the ride. Very good news, though. We're not doing it alone. Throughout the series, I'll be chatting with a bunch of experts and they're going to show me exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. So if you are feeling stuck or you're just starting out, you are in the right place. I'll be asking all of the questions that are probably already running through your head. In the last episode, I spoke with certified money coach Karen Ely.
We spoke about the reasons people delay investing and we unpacked some of the psychological barriers that were keeping me stuck. After that chat and some coaching with Karen, I'm feeling a lot clearer about what's been holding me back and a lot more ready to take action. But before I invest a single dollar, there's one really important step I need to take first, which is getting my money right. So today we're stepping into the practical side of things. I'm looking at my budgeting, my savings rates and the systems that will actually make investing possible for me.
What should you do before investing any money?
To help me do that, I'm joined by Glenn James. He's a former financial advisor and host of the very popular Money, Money, Money podcast. I'll also be chatting with one of our community members, Phoebe. Phoebe is living proof that putting the right systems in place can make a huge difference. By the end of this episode, I'm hoping to walk away with a realistic savings rate and a budgeting framework that I can actually hopefully stick to. Alrighty, let's get into it. Glenn James, welcome to the show.
Thanks so much for having me.
Look, let's get practical. In your book, you speak about building a sound financial house before just diving into investing straight away. So I thought it'd be quite fun to go through your financial house test together.
Yeah.
So yeah, I'm going to let you quiz me and let's see how we go.
So the reason sound financial house came about when I was a practicing financial advisor people would come into my office and be like, we want to invest. We want to buy an investment property. Awesome. Before we do that, let's just have a look at everything else. Oh, you're in credit card debt. You don't have a good money management system. You don't have good income insurance or any income insurance because everything you want to do is based on income walking in the door every month. Well, if that income stopped, you'd be screwed. You don't have a will. You don't have an estate plan. So people were building their house the wrong way. So when you build a house or a building, the first thing and the stuff that can take the longest and cost quite a bit is the foundations because they need to stand the test of time.
You cannot build an old parable or whatever, a house on sand.
Yeah.
It ain't good, right? So I've developed four foundations. The first one is a spending plan. The second foundation is to be cashed up and debt-free, cashed up meaning an emergency fund, debt-free, no consumer debt, forget the car for now and forget HECS or help debt. Foundation three is a protection plan, so insurances, income insurances and life insurance, and foundation four being wills and an estate plan. Then once you sort that out, Then you can say, well, I know that I'm spending this amount and I've got X amount left over per month or per week. Then we can say, well, what are we going to do with it? The slab of the house is like your career and superannuation because we've all got that as well.
