Welcome, everyone, to Breaking Big Blue. I'm your host, Jordan Rahn, on ESPN, ESPN.com. Giants reporter, we're here live from the NFL Combine. We're going to go over everything we heard today so far. It's early in the Combine, so we've got to keep this in perspective. But we did hear from Joe Shane and John Harbaugh today, got a little idea on the futures of some key Giants players.
What insights did Joe Schoen and John Harbaugh share at the NFL Combine?
We'll get to that in a second, starting with Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Tibbitt. Two names that have come up a lot recently in conversations around the Giants. at least on social media and among the fan base, at least that I've seen. And also I think are naturally just questions because of where they are in their career. So we'll get to that in a few minutes. It'll be me and football grump today. Bobby bailed on us something like an anniversary or something. Come on. I got to come up with a better excuse than that. Bobby to bail on combine week. So me and grump, we'll break it all down for you right here. Now, like I said, It is early in the week. So the conversations that happen in the combine, and as John Harbaugh said, this is like one of the most important things about the combine, is that the conversations with teams and about free agents happen here in Indianapolis.
It is Tuesday. They really pick up probably from like Wednesday to Friday. So we're still very, very early in the process in that regard. Check back. Next episode will probably, you know, maybe we'll do one Friday or early or maybe Monday next week. And then we should have a much better feel on where the Giants are with everything. And you can start with their top three free agents. Jermaine Luminor, Wanda Robinson, Cordell Flott, and maybe, you know, trademark it. Maybe Kayvon Thibodeau. Maybe. With that one second, I want to start with Dexter Lawrence. Okay. Because naturally, you just watch his body language, the way this past season went, didn't come in, wasn't in great shape. Was it Joe Shane, actually, who said today, yeah, maybe, you know, why didn't he perform, like, to the level that I think most people expected?
He said, you know, nine sacks is kind of probably going to be the outlier from what he had the previous year. Even though he got injured, that was, what, 12 games or whatever. But also the elbow injury that cost him those final five games might have, He might not have been at 100% this year. He never wanted to use it as an excuse. But clearly there was something there. Didn't come in in great shape as a result. And I think we saw the whole, you know, spin cycle there of how it all just spiraled for Dexter Lawrence this past season. Clearly wasn't a great season for Dexter Lawrence. So, but, but. Despite all that, listening to John Harbaugh and Joe Shane today, pretty clear they want Dexter Lawrence to be on this team.
He's no more guaranteed money, so they're probably going to have to address his contract. He has $3 million guaranteed this year. That's it. And that's injury guaranteed only. He's not hurt right now. So they're going to have to address the contract because, first of all, Dexter Lawrence at $20 million a year is a bargain. He's not going to love that. And at no guaranteed money, God forbid he gets injured, they just cut him and move on and he's done and he's got no protection. So from a player who's a good player, really, really good player, has been a great player in his career at points, he has enough leverage where he will say, and this is just me spitballing here, but I think everybody kind of agrees, there's going to be to some degree some contract adjustment.
Remember last year he wanted his contract adjusted. All he got was $3 million in you know, kind of bogus incentives, you know, concession that really was not barely a concession. So Dexter Lawrence, what John Harbaugh said is really important player for them. Super, super important. So he's a cornerstone. Well, not really a cornerstone. He's their middle stone. We want him. We need him. Doesn't sound like a player that's going anywhere. We want him.
