Chapter 3: Why are the Edmonton Oilers considering Mike Babcock as head coach?
That might be the players. But that's code for a guy that's going to come in and is going to wreak havoc And he's going to disrupt what many have seen as maybe a country club atmosphere under Nablok, who, for as cerebral a coach as he might have been, was very calm, very demure. He was a very easygoing guy, and I think... They're looking for the polar opposite now.
Someone that's going to come in and maybe unleash psychological warfare on these guys in the hope that it stirs something up. That's how desperate the Oilers are right now. Yeah, because I really think it's going to be difficult for them to improve their roster dramatically. Yeah, I agree. Who are they going to get to go and goal? Maybe Binnington? They're going to have to pay for that.
How are they going to have to pay for it? And what then do you do with Tristan Jari? Do you have to add a sweetener to get rid of that contract? Or do you just keep him? Okay, well then, you know, it's not a great cap hit to have. What are you going to do with Darnell Nurse? There's all sorts of rumors about Darnell Nurse having played his last game for the Edmonton Oilers, but...
I don't think you're going to get, you're not going to get anything for Darnell Nurse, 31 years old, four years left on his deal with a 9.25 cap hit, and he's got a full no-move clause, so he's going to control that situation. Zach Hyman's 34 now, Nugent's 33. You know, Ekholm is much older now. He's 36. Those were the key guys.
That's, you know, when you throw in Drysaddle and McDavid, those are still the key guys in Edmonton. Yeah, they got some good play down the stretch from, you know, obviously, Pod Colson and Matt Savoy, but they obviously weren't good enough. They got beaten by the Ducks in the first round and weren't very good all season. You know, ask Drysaddle and McDavid. They said that we were an average team.
And what happens to average teams? They go out in the first round. So how is Stan Bowman going to dramatically improve this Oilers roster this offseason? They don't have a first-round pick this year or next that they can deal. Who on their roster has value that they can trade away and not miss to improve the roster? Stan Bowman has not done a good job with the roster. Not recently, at least.
There have been times when he has, and the others got to the Stanley Cup Final two years in a row. But it feels to me like this is... All right. You know, Bruce Cassidy would have been...
expected as a hire but you know even bruce cassidy can come in and cause issues in the room but maybe that's what mcdavid and dry saw don't want that maybe they think that there were guys on the team that were a little sleepy uh didn't uh i don't want to say respect knoblock but you know didn't fear him at least mm-hmm
But I would be very curious to know what McDavid and Dreisaitl think about Babcock. Now, apparently, according to Fridge, Babcock has met with some of the leadership group. So is this the leadership group signing off on this deal? I believe there's a very strong connection between Babcock and Zach Hyman. Okay. That I think maybe is a part of this. From Toronto. Yeah.

Chapter 4: How did Mike Babcock's past controversies affect his reputation?
Yes. Okay? Uh-huh. And I know the Canucks have said all the right things about Pettersson in recent weeks, and it's actually been encouraging to hear that they might try a different approach to motivate him. Make your case, Jason. Like, as opposed to bullying him, maybe seeing, like, how are you feeling? That sort of thing. Okay. Right? Keep going.
I don't think they'd hang up the phone if the Kings or any other team were to call about acquiring Pettersson. Forget Pettersson's play for just a moment here. And remember that he turns 28 in November and will be on the other side of 30 when the Canucks emerge from this rebuild. Unless there's some sort of miracle. It's going to take years. And then where is Pettersson's game then?
You know, he hasn't always been called like, this guy keeps himself in great shape. He'll play forever. You know, he's not that type of guy. Could be if he trained, but hasn't so far. So could Ken Holland talk himself into, all right, we'll bring in Elitist Pettersson. It won't cost us much. We'll have him and Byfield, I guess, as our top two centers.
And maybe Pedersen will rekindle his on-ice relationship with Kuzmenko. Ah, yes. Kuzmenko's there. Kuzmenko connection. Kempe, who's one of their best players down in L.A., played with Petey at Four Nations and the Olympics. Now, Kempe might say like, yeah, he wasn't that good. Yeah. You want to get him in here? Yeah. I played with him in the Olympics.
So I am, and look, even if it's not Pettersson, I'm curious to see how the Kings do this. Because it seems to me that they are pot committed with a roster that is pretty meh. Again, you got some good players like Kempe, Fiala, who they missed a lot, by the way, in the playoffs, and Byfield, who I think took some steps last season. They do have players.
Now, Ken Holland added a couple of defensemen that he still maintains were a good addition, but I don't think were. CeCe and Dumoulin. But he didn't go down there to rebuild. So he needs to do something this offseason. And, you know, sometimes that something leads to craziness. Like, I don't know, the Canucks acquiring Oliver Ekman-Larsen. Yeah. Or the Oilers saying, what about Meg Babcock?
You know, desperation when you need to get results. Here's another crazy thing. You will not believe this. You will not believe this. But this is something that a crazy general manager did or a crazy management did in the NHL.

Chapter 5: What challenges are the Oilers facing in improving their roster?
Okay. They knew their star defenseman and captain was going to leave. They knew it. In fact, they'd pretty much been told. And yet they still made a bunch of moves in this desperate attempt to make him change his mind. I find that hard to believe. No, they brought in this coach who had no head coaching experience in the NHL and honestly barely any head coaching experience at all.
In fact, he didn't even last a season in junior, but they brought him in because they thought this guy liked him, had a good relationship, and they made him the head coach. And they signed all these other guys that happened to be from the same country as this star defenseman. And they were like, I think this guy's buddies with him.
So we'll give these guys, even though we're not even sure that we should resign these guys, we did it anyway in this desperate attempt to keep this player. I don't know, man. That feels way too reckless for any logical GM. Or president of hockey. I just made it up. There's no way something like that would happen. These are billion-dollar operations.
There's no way that you would run a team as recklessly as that. Just do it on a whim? I was just making it up. Okay, we got a lot more to get into on the Halford and Brough show on Sportsnet 650. Coming up, Greg Wyshynski, our NHL insider from ESPN, is going to join the program. Game four of the Stanley Cup final goes tonight in Vegas. Greg is going to join us to break it down.

We planned to get to it, but it's not very often that Mike Babcock resurfaces in the NHL coaching search world. It just took everybody by surprise. And quite frankly, the hockey world by storm. Let's go now to the Able Auctions hotline. Our next guest, our NHL insider from ESPN, Greg Wyshynski, joins us now on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Morning, Wish. How are you?

Chapter 6: What do Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl think about Babcock?
And, you know, he's obviously met with ownership. He's met with the players. The players seem to have signed off on it. The players are the ones who reached out to the NHLPA. I mean, I shouldn't say that. they also reached out to the NHLPA along with the Oilers organization to kind of figure out where things stand and also just to kind of figure out, Hey, is this something we should do?
And apparently so, so far things are kind of trending in a positive way where it would be at least a little surprising at this point as, as you know, if Bob's going to Bob's offer is going to plant his flag on it that this doesn't come together and Babcock doesn't end up being the coach.
Do you think part of this has to do with how difficult it's going to be for the Oilers to dramatically improve their roster? That they're like, well, let's take a big cut on the coach. You know, sometimes you strike out swinging, but sometimes you hit a home run.
I think that's part of it, but I also think there's probably a sense of egotism involved for Stan Bowman in that he believes the roster he built is probably better than it is. and just needs someone else to unlock it. I mean, ultimately you're right, which is that the more you look at the situation in Edmonton, the more you start to wonder if their window, if it hasn't closed, it's getting there.
And the amount of dramatic changes they can make to that roster are pretty limited. I mean, everyone assumes they're going to trade Darnell nurse, but you know, what does that ultimately get you? How much, how much better is this team if it's Morgan Riley instead of Darnell nurse, for example, you know? So like, I don't know. I mean, you know, teams have very limited cards to play.
Changing the coaches is always one of them. But, but I think the real issue here though, boys is like, is Mike Babcock, that guy, guys and coaches league since what? 2019. You know, there's still, the jury is still out whether or not this guy is simply just a product of,
three things john sebastian jaguar nick lidstrom and the greatest assemblage of talent in the history of team canada like there's some real there's the jury's out as to whether or not this guy is actually like the kind of coach that they need to affect change and from a systems perspective fix all the spackle over all the problems they have i think cassidy is that guy proven to be that guy proven to get quick results and i don't know if if babcock's that guy to be honest with you
Yeah, he's definitely lost his luster. Wish, do you remember some of the scrums around Mike Babcock at the Olympics and how much of a presence he was? And obviously, you've been more scrums than me with coaches, but he had media eating out of his hands, basically.
And I always wondered if he had the same with the players because he does have a presence about him, and that is important when you're a coach. You know, it's almost like, as someone said, like the emperor has no clothes. And, you know, is that gone for him? And is that going to be tougher to recreate in Edmonton with all the things that have happened to Mike Babcock?

Chapter 7: What are the implications of hiring an experienced coach like Babcock?
if you think back to game one against Montreal, it'd be one guy making a bad play on a goal that leads to the goal. And I think in some of these cases, especially in game two, it was one missed assignment or one turnover or this, that, and the other thing, and then all of a sudden Carolina is extremely vulnerable.
I also think that they're going to make some pretty substantial changes tactically in this game. I think one of the things they've identified, I know, is in the second period in particular Vegas's ability to go for these home run passes and these really long passes down ice have given Carolina some trouble.
And I was talking to Taylor Hall about this yesterday and he almost, he made the comparison of, of maybe they need to find like a nickel package. Yeah. They need to find a little bit more of a pass defense in the second period in particular. I thought that was Taylor's by the way, like one of my favorite people to talk to. I think that guy's going to,
have a great career after he's done in media and stuff because he's just fascinating to talk to. But that's one of the tactical changes they have to make because other teams I don't think were able to exploit
Carolina's lapses on defense and some of the holes that they have in their system as much as Vegas has been able to well isn't that sort of like the adjustment they made after game one against Montreal where they're giving up all these these breakaways and you know they like they're there they like the D like to pinch and keep pucks in but sometimes when they get too aggressive the puck will get chipped by them and they'll give up breakaways which we've seen in the past so maybe it's similar to that adjustment and that seemed to work it
It is, but it isn't because I really think the problem in Game 1 with Montreal was the layoff. 11 days between games, the longest layoff between series, the longest layoff we had in 107 years. They all swore up and down, hey, this is going to help. We're going to be so rested. And then they get on the ice and they look like they forgot how to play hockey.
I think that was more the issue in Game 1 against Montreal. I think in Vegas' case, they just... they've, they've, you know, found some ways to exploit the system and, and there's going to need to be some tactical changes in the way they approach it.
But, you know, their mindset's interesting because I, it comes from Brenda Moore in the sense that he's really instilled in them that, Hey, we're just a couple of shots away from, from being up in this series. And I mean, that's factually accurate, but you know, they also needed miraculous rallies in two straight games to even be in that conversation. So, I don't know what to expect tonight.
I, I'm, I'm sort of, you know, overwhelmed by how good Vegas, Vegas can be in stretches and yet underwhelmed by how their goalie can give up like three goals in 38 seconds or whatever it was. Are we seeing any signs of life from Sebastian Ajo? Yeah, he's playing better. He's definitely playing better. He made a great pass in game, game three to set up one of the goals. Um,
