I don't even know where to start, to be honest. I love that answer, by the way. It's beyond ridiculous. When you just take a step back and the fact that you saw Darren Drager's tweet that, you know, the orders reached out to the NHL PA to see if there are objections that must be resolved before potentially hiring Mike Babcock.
Can you think of any other situation where a coach got hired that you're like, man, his past is so shady that we have to reach out to the NHL PA to think if they're okay with this. So that's strike one. But then you can just go through, and I actually wrote an article when Babcock's name was brought up three weeks ago, outlining just how asinine it would be.

Chapter 2: What are the implications of hiring Mike Babcock as the Oilers' head coach?
But that doesn't mean that they're a terrible team and they're far away. It just means that them and Vegas continue to be the two top teams, and they're close. And it's a new voice and they're excited. And now this year they'll be rested, right? Because they were out, they had a shorter summer. I do think
fatigue has something to do with it not everything small part of it so regardless of who the head coach is this team is going to be fine in the regular season with the roster now they obviously could make some moves like i i should say that if they don't resign connor murphy now they got a massive void again because they don't have a right shot defenseman and there's really not available in free agency but if they bring connor murphy back all year long he was very good for the orders down the stretch him and darnell nurse were their best pair in the playoffs by a mile
So I don't really buy into that this roster is grossly flawed. There's still some questions in goal, totally valid. But these are questions in goal for five years, and they made it sound like a final twice. Could you try to rectify that? Sure. But bring in Mike Babcock. Yes, the team has to play better defensively, but I'm still not sold, guys, that that's 100% on the coach.
Because they did that under Knobloch for the first year and a bit, and then slowly it eroded. They did it under Dave Tippett, and then slowly it eroded. So is it the coach or are the players willing to commit all year to being good defensively? Connor McDavid scored 138 points, guys. Unreal offensive player. Most talented player in the league. No one debates that. But he's plus 12.
His defensive game wasn't good enough. Leon Dreisaitl finished sixth in Selkie voting in 2025. Took a big step. He told me at the end of the year, did not like my defensive game. Now, does the coach... Is the coach the only way you can play good defense? Or does that come from within, internally? I would argue it comes internally.
The coach, you can take an A team and make it an A-plus team, maybe. You're sure as hell not taking a B team and making them an A-plus team. It's not happening. I think the players have enough talent. They did not respect the regular season enough. They admitted that at the end of the year. They never really got into a rhythm.

You can't coach unless you're John Cooper or Jared Bednar for more than three years. But I don't see the orders needing to be that desperate. that you have to go after the one coach whose last job he didn't even last summer.
Didn't even coach a game. I do want to ask you about Darnell Nurse. Do you expect him to be traded? Because Mark Spector of Sportsnet suggested it was being actively discussed.
Well, I do know that there's limitations in Darnell's game. No question. But there's also things that are, I think at times, We can focus just on what the player doesn't do and then overlook what he does do. Darnell Nurse, like Paul Coffey, who played the most minutes five on five for the Oilers defense in Anaheim.
And by the way, he outscored the Ducks when he was on the ice, they outscored him seven to three. He had the best goal for against ratio in the playoffs. I know it's a small sample size, but if you look at all the other years, like this guy's been a top 10 defenseman in minutes play. He's not a top 10 defenseman in decision-making. I understand that.
So there's, there's some areas of his game that,
that frustrate you at times but if you trade Darnell Nurse it better not be a Stuart Skinner trade everybody wanted to get rid of Stuart Skinner and I was like are you sure maybe play a little bit better defense sure he can be more consistent but he's making 2.6 mil and you can fill out your roster better so what do you do you trade him with Brett Kulak and a second round pick for a goalie who makes twice as much as Skinner who's injury prone and didn't play as well great trade
So what are you going to do the same thing with Darnell nurse? Like you can trade any player guys. I have no problem if they trade Darnell nurse. And I think at times that, you know, there's lots of reasons why you trade them, but you better not have another, what we just get rid of Darnell nurse. Cause you can't just go pluck off a defense and the complete 20 minutes a night.
And the other thing is he shows up every game. You guys are in Vancouver. If I ask you about Demco, all you're going to say is availability. It's not good enough. Yeah, when he's healthy, it's great. Darnell Nurse shows up. In the last nine years, he's missed a total of 18 games. In nine years. And he's played the second most minutes in the entire NHL in that time. So, yeah, sure, trade him.
But you better not just give them away so you can free up cap space to sign who? The unicorns of a very shallow free agent pool?

So I would re-sign Kapanen because I don't think he's going to cost you very much. And he's been pretty consistent here the last few years. He's a former first-round pick who maybe took a little bit longer to figure out the consistency factor, but if I'm paying him $2 million, I'm fine with that. Then you've got to look and say, okay, we don't need another defenseman if you have Murphy and Nurse.
You've got your defense core, and you can keep them. And then if you... They need a third-line center, and they need a right-shot center. Now, there are some guys out there. You can get Noel Achari. You can get Kevin Stenland. And you might have to pay a bit more for Stenland, but he's coming off a little bit of a down year in Utah.
But where Edmonton struggled with small areas of the game, they didn't have a right-shot center, especially to help on the penalty kill. Because then you had to have lefties on their offside. Because most teams in the offensive zone, their best center is a left shot. So he likes to be to the right of the goalie. But that's on the forehand of a lefty, right? And so I looked up Stenland.
Stenland, two years ago, was 62% in the face-off zone, in the defensive zone, and 58% last year. He took 657 defensive zone face-offs in Utah. The most an order took was 310. Because they split it up because they didn't really have anybody. So when I look at small pieces, that's who you need. But here's the challenge. If you bring in Mike Babcock, who does Mike Babcock prey on?

But the, what about ism is amazing, right?
Like some people were trying to compare John Tortorella to Mike Babcock. And I'm like, can you please show me the actual examples of, of players on record that were John Tortorella, you know, basically bullied them and beat them down. Now, John might be a hard coach and not every player loves him, right? Guys are hard on you, but you can still treat a guy like a human being.
I have never seen a report that John Tortorella is that guy. So don't confuse being a hard coach with being a bully coach. Two very different things. And if winning with a cup was like the main thing, Well, you've got Craig Berube. You've got Claude Julien. You've got Daryl Sutter. Why not bring him off the farm? He's been in the league more recently than Mike Babcock.
He won a playoff series in 2022 with the Calgary Flames.

So if those are all your reasons, then do it. But to me, the only way I guess now that it doesn't happen, I believe, is if the NHL steps in and the NHLPA speaks up and says, you know what? We don't want this, but that would require courage guys.
And sadly in our time, there's a lot of people in their own inner circles, whether it's politics or sports that want to protect each other and they're not going to speak up.
It could be a real inflection point for the league and the union and yeah, everything that this pertains to Jason. This was really great, man. Thanks for taking the time to do this. So, some of the anonymous scouts... uh, that Corey Prondman cited, uh, in his, um, his piece up on the athletic, um, you know, they're, they're saying like, there's no clear guy this year. There's a group of players. Um, You know, this is an anonymous scout. There are six, seven guys, and they're all very close.

The Minnesota Wild are going to re-sign Michael McCarron having picked him up at last year's trade deadline.
According to Rick Dollywall, this is going to be a six-year deal for Michael McCarron with a $3.3 million AAV. To put that in perspective, Michael McCarron played last year on a $900,000 deal. Michael McCarron has now signed for nearly $20 million. What's more, he's 31 years old, too. The six-year term will take him until 37 years old.
And this goes for a guy with a career high of 12 goals two years ago in Nashville. Last year, he scored eight. And he signed for $20 million at age 31. The National Hockey League, everybody. Have fun in free agency. It's the rising salary cap. Yeah. No one's going to... I mean, if you're Minnesota, you're like, why not keep them around? We got the money. Yeah, I guess.
