Hello, everybody. Welcome to Health Chatter. Today, we're going to be talking with the incoming president of the Minnesota Public Health Association, which is a wonderful organization. It's the Minnesota affiliate of the American Public Health Association. Got a great guest. And also, he's got some great interests himself that he'll be talking about for sure. So stay tuned on that. There we go. All right. So let's move into our show today. We've got a great guest. William Moore is the incoming president for, like I said, for the Minnesota Public Health Association. Graduated from Concordia University here in the state of Minnesota with a major in history.
He's worked in the St. Paul University. school district for a few years for sure. He's lobbied in Washington, D.C. on many public health issues and has dealt with youth and how they can be involved in a variety of health-related issues. He soon will be working with Ramsey County as an educator looking at chronic disease prevention which is near and dear to my heart for sure. He was named in 2019, and this will be a twist on the show as well, and he'll talk about this. He was named as the DeBoma Foundation 40 and under public health honoree for his achievement in family health, in public health, and as the first male doula in the state of Minnesota, which I think is really, really cool. So Thank you so much for being with us, William.
It's a pleasure having you. What are your interests going forward with the Public Health Association and the things that you think are the most important thing that an association like that should do going forward?
Yeah, so kind of like I said, so I'm president-elect, which means that I take office next year for MPHA. And currently kind of serving side-by-side and supporting role of Melanie Ferris, who is the current president of MPHA. And is actually responsible for really, who's a good friend of mine and colleague who I've worked with ever since I first started in public health. eight, nine years ago, and is responsible for really kind of giving me the idea of saying like, yes, this is something that I want to do. My vision for public health here, or MPHA, for both of them, so to speak, in the next few years is pretty specific in terms of, one, I think in the field of public health, we need to be a lot more
vocal and outgoing about the work that we do and why it's important. Especially in present day when we see public health kind of under attack at the federal level in terms of the defunding of public health and public health programs, but then also just the narratives out there that are trying to delegitimize the field of public health. I have a really good friend who always says, Everything is good till it ain't. And that's how I like to think about public health. Like a lot of people don't know, a lot of people don't realize how important public health is because we're doing the background work so that you don't have to be concerned about things. I remember during COVID, You know, there were some naysayers out there about, you know, COVID or, you know, had feelings, you know, thoughts about the vaccine and saying, well, I haven't encountered this or this hasn't impacted my life or I haven't had to deal with this.
