18.905 - 46.525 Brianna Gomez

Welcome to today's episode of Hot and Unbothered. 🎵 Hello beautiful people and welcome back to my podcast. If you're new here, my name is Brianna Gomez or you can call me Bri and I am your host of Hot and Unbothered, the ultimate place to be for the girlies who want the facts, who want the bread and butter, who want the hard, cold, straight truth.

0

46.505 - 64.665 Brianna Gomez

on how to become a better version of themselves. We're not talking the extra fluffy stuff like a certain skincare routine. We are talking actual, actionable changes that you can start today that will help you become a higher, healthier, and happier version of you. So I am so happy you are here.

0

64.645 - 84.823 Brianna Gomez

If you are new here, go ahead and just hit that follow button and commit to becoming the highest version of yourself this year. It's still early days. We've got lots of work and growth to do, but growth starts now. I feel like so many people think like, oh, you know, it's only January. I'll start in March. I have until next December to level up my life and accomplish my goals.

0

85.144 - 100.983 Brianna Gomez

But the truth is that the habits that your foundation for this year will be built upon start now. And the worst habit that many of us are guilty of, are you ready for it? You might even be on it right now. Your phone.

101.363 - 117.687 Brianna Gomez

And I don't mean, you know, you're going to ruin your entire self-care journey if you're sitting here and watching a podcast on your phone, or if you watch a few self-help podcasts every now and then, or if you watch your favorite show sometimes, or if you post on Instagram, you want to be a content creator. I don't mean that. But

117.667 - 138.965 Brianna Gomez

But I think a lot of us know that it gets to a point where it's oftentimes something out of your control. Let me ask you this. Let's all open our settings right now and go to our screen time and see how many hours we have been on our phone this past week, maybe even. See your average times per day that you pick up your phone.

139.286 - 157.14 Brianna Gomez

You can actually comment what your screen or how many times you pick up your phone. I don't know what it's called. I think it's just pickups in your settings. Everyone comment right now. Comment your screen time and comment how many times you pick up your phone. And then what we're going to do is after this episode, we are going to come back in a week

157.424 - 173.767 Brianna Gomez

And you are going to reply to yourself the difference, okay? Comment right now what your screen time and how many pickups you have per day. And then next week, set a reminder on your phone right now. Set the reminder, add it to your calendar. Next week, at this very moment, you are going to come back and you're going to tell me the difference.

Chapter 2: How does phone usage affect our daily lives?

559.045 - 581.535 Brianna Gomez

I did not feel bored. Not even once. I did not feel bored. I spent time with my family. Guys, I don't spend time with my family. It's just not like that. We're not that kind of family. I spent time with my family. I was so productive. I literally woke up. It was like 9 a.m. I didn't even know what time it was because I didn't have my phone yet. And I just bleached our sink.

0

582.256 - 597.291 Brianna Gomez

Mind you, like I live with people. So that's like not my job to bleach and clean the sink. I was just doing it. I organized our entire pantry like for no reason, but just because I felt like it and I had the energy to give into it because there wasn't.

0

597.271 - 618.317 Brianna Gomez

a block of bricks aka my phone that was draining all of my energy out of me so it was so beautiful honestly to see wow just one day without my phone i could have gone a whole week without that you guys like i could have gone a whole another week without my phone if i didn't have work to get done and people to keep in contact with

0

618.297 - 639.37 Brianna Gomez

It literally made me want to get a flip phone so that way I can still like talk to people and be in contact with them and update them, make sure everyone's doing well without having it sucked into something. So that is my anti-phone testimony. Now, on the other hand, the holidays totally made me backslide. They definitely sent me out of my routine. I definitely had a little mini burnout.

0

639.971 - 660.625 Brianna Gomez

And what did I do? I picked up the phone and now I've been in that paralysis. I've been in that phone coma where I just have been on it. And when you wake up and you go on your phone, oh my gosh, you are setting yourself up for a terrible day. When you pick up your phone, And the first thing you see is everyone else's lives.

661.025 - 678.861 Brianna Gomez

You pick up your phone and the first thing you see is a horrible text from your boss. The first thing you see is that the boy that you like didn't text you. You are setting yourself up for failure in your day. How you start your day, I said this once, I'll say it a million times, is inevitably how it will go.

679.241 - 702.477 Brianna Gomez

So when you are starting your day with this dopamine rush, nothing else in the day is going to be able to compare to that. It's just taken slow living out of our vocabulary as a whole. When you're on your phone, everything is so fast. It's like, oh my gosh, another video, another video. Oh my gosh, I'm mad at someone. Let me text them and yell at them and start a fight. It's so endless.

702.657 - 723.55 Brianna Gomez

So my challenge for you guys, no, I do not expect you to put your phone down in this very moment. and to be off it for the next 24 hours. But my hope for you is that after listening to this episode, you will be in a place where you want to do that and you'll be able to do that with ease because you know that it is good for you.

723.53 - 746.01 Brianna Gomez

I'm going to dive into some of the physical, scientifically proven studies that have shown the physical, mental, any kind of effects on us. And I know that a lot of you who listen are, we have actually a wide range of age who listen, but for the sake of this, I know that there are some of you who are younger and I want to show that even if you are young and

Chapter 3: What are the mental and physical effects of excessive screen time?

1183.407 - 1208.44 Brianna Gomez

we have become so attached to this constant need for information at all times. Let me break this down. For example, pre-phone, pre-iPhone days, smartphone, excuse me, you used to call someone on their home phone, for example, and if they didn't answer, oh, well, no big deal. I'll leave a voicemail. They'll get back to you when they can.

0

1208.921 - 1228.411 Brianna Gomez

Nowadays, if you text or even Snapchat someone if you're into that, and they don't get back to you for a couple of hours, your nervous system rises. You feel anxious and your brain automatically assumes, oh my gosh, they hate me. Oh my gosh, they're mad at me. Oh my gosh, they died. Something's wrong. Their phone must be broken. I don't know. I'm freaking out. They're not talking to me.

0

1230.014 - 1244.182 Brianna Gomez

I don't think we were ever meant to have that instant communication with people to the point where it gets in between a person and their personal space. And like for me personally, I don't want to be talking 24-7 every single second.

0

1244.422 - 1265.48 Brianna Gomez

However, we now feel like we have the need to respond to everyone instantly, to get back to everyone instantly when maybe you might not be feeling like you are in that headspace right now. And another thing, when it comes to something being wrong with you. Okay, maybe you have an itchy throat, right? Back then, you wait. You wait a few days. If it persists, maybe you'll call your doctor.

0

1265.5 - 1276.493 Brianna Gomez

You'll go to the doctor, get it checked out, make sure everything's fine. Oftentimes, it ends up just being a little head cold, a little flu virus going around. Nowadays, when something's wrong, and I know even I'm guilty of this,

1277.249 - 1296.397 Brianna Gomez

we're pulling up our phones, we're talking to Google, we're talking to ChatGPT and we are asking, oh my gosh, like something's wrong with me, spelling out all of your symptoms, spelling out everything you ate in the past few days and you're letting this robot, this screen be your doctor. Suddenly it has a degree and suddenly it can run tests on you in person, right?

1296.497 - 1318.187 Brianna Gomez

And it knows exactly what's wrong. No, but we have this constant need for information. If something's wrong, we have to know it right away. If someone's mad at us, we have to know it right away. If I have to tell someone something, I have to do it right away. There's no patience. There's no waiting. There's no healthy level of communication if you are expecting an instant answer from someone.

1318.548 - 1341.1 Brianna Gomez

And that just totally opened my eyes to being like, wow. We have become so overly reliant on this constant need for information and that just shows how much it plays into our anxiety, into our overthinking. And that's not a healthy relationship to have with a screen. It's just not. The other thing that I want to bring into this conversation is, of course, social media.

1341.12 - 1367.539 Brianna Gomez

I have been on social media for a long time now and it's so... weird to me. How something that started with the intentions of being fun and artistic and just light-hearted now is the reason why so many people have self-image issues. They have anxiety. They have social communication issues. They have body dysmorphia. They have eating disorders. They have comparison jealousy issues.

Chapter 4: How can we realistically reduce our screen time?

1510.495 - 1533.347 Brianna Gomez

you will never be satisfied because i'll tell you this much if you get the followers right you want 10 000 followers and you think that will be something that fulfills you you get them suddenly you want 20 000 followers and then you want 100 000 followers and then you want a million like you always want more and social media is not some finish line that we are waiting to complete

0

1533.327 - 1560.526 Brianna Gomez

It is something that is never ending. And if you don't learn how to have the willpower, the self-control and discipline to say, I am going to log off. I am going to put it down and shut it off. You will never be happy. And I say this with the hopes that you don't just say, okay, yeah, I guess it's true. I'll never be happy. No, I want you to be happy and you should want you to be happy.

0

1560.907 - 1575.467 Brianna Gomez

And so learn how to have some balance of self-control in a relationship where you can walk away. And I say this about people and all of my self-love episodes, my self-worth episodes, friendship, dating episodes.

0

1575.447 - 1596.021 Brianna Gomez

I always say that even if you love the people in your life, you have to have enough respect, worth, and value that you hold within yourself where you know that if everyone disappeared or broke up with you or didn't want to be your friend anymore, you would be okay. You would rise again the next day, the sun will come up, and you will keep moving forward.

0

1596.406 - 1623.645 Brianna Gomez

And I want you to have this perspective with whatever is going on on your phone. If you wake up tomorrow and you lost all your followers, your friends didn't text you, that does not define your life. But we give it so much power and we place it on such a high pedestal where most of us actually do let it define the value of what's going on in our life. We place our phone...

1623.625 - 1635.244 Brianna Gomez

as almost a defining factor of everything else. Oh, if people are texting me, that means my friendships are going well. Oh, if I'm getting enough likes and followers, that means my career is going well.

1635.364 - 1655.235 Brianna Gomez

And I just quickly want to put emphasis on the fact that we cannot keep destroying the reality that is right in front of us because we are too hyper fixated on escaping this reality to enter a fake one. We as humans are not designed to live in isolation. We are designed to love and interact with one another.

1655.275 - 1676.262 Brianna Gomez

And it's so ironic to me that we think we are creating more interaction with other people by entering our phone. Like what? You watching videos over and over again about people you will never meet, people you'll never talk to again, people you'll never see in real life, people who don't even care about you. We somehow in our twisted brains think that consuming more of that

1676.242 - 1693.035 Unknown

is strong enough, meaningful enough, maybe entertaining enough to replace actual, genuine human interaction. Interaction with the world around us. Interaction with real life, tangible things.

Chapter 5: What actionable changes can help improve focus?

2159.297 - 2175.643 Brianna Gomez

It's become literally an attachment to our souls and our minds and our bodies. And no physical, inanimate object should have that power over our lives. And this sounds so preachy right now, but I say this because...

0

2175.623 - 2197.969 Brianna Gomez

i experience it and i've been in it and i have to say like there is no lower point i've been in my life than when i was doing social media full time because my phone then became not only my personal life and my social life but it became my work life too and there was no division between the two and it was all meshing together it's kind of like how people say it's leaving your nine to five to work 24 7.

0

2197.949 - 2214.716 Brianna Gomez

because there is no divide. So now I actually love having my little part-time job that I go to once a week because like, wow, it feels good knowing that I have at least one day in the week where I will not be on my phone and I can actually be in reality and interact with people, which is so crazy to say.

0

2215.257 - 2227.681 Brianna Gomez

We crave casual human interaction away from phones so much that I actually enjoy going to work for that reason alone. which is great that we have that escape, but you have to let yourself get that escape.

0

2227.721 - 2246.002 Brianna Gomez

And with all things, they can be good in moderation, but when it becomes something that you are abusing and when it is overtaking your life and it is making you more present there than in your real life, That's when it becomes an issue. So something that I definitely recommend also would be to journal, of course, and keep a planner.

2246.022 - 2254.686 Brianna Gomez

You guys know I have my becoming her planner and this has truly helped me just really prioritize and be intentional with my time.

2254.666 - 2276.86 Brianna Gomez

There are lots of pages on setting your intentions for the week, for the month, for the year, but each week it allows you to write your priorities and your intentions for the week and this just helps me stay organized and that way I know and I can check off like, okay, I need to do these things before I scroll. I know a lot of you are not going to stop scrolling.

2276.84 - 2304.484 Brianna Gomez

So my ask is that you at least do the things you need to get done before you scroll because the phone is the most amazing tool for procrastination. I will give you that. I think the phone is procrastination's best friend. Another hack that I love is only letting myself go on my phone when I am on the treadmill or working out or doing something. Only letting myself go on...

2304.464 - 2325.493 Brianna Gomez

tiktok if i am on the treadmill and that way at least one i know i can't be on there forever right i could not do five hours on the treadmill i'm sorry i just can't but if i'm on there for an hour and i need an hour to go on and interact with some people even if i do end up accidentally scrolling at least i'm getting my steps in while doing so so that's been my favorite hack for a while
