What are the common anti‑patterns that can derail a startup?
The first thing that founders have to understand about VCs is that VCs and founders are aligned until they're not aligned.
Right.
And it's actually almost inevitable that you would be misaligned with your VCs at some point on the startup journey. It doesn't have to happen now, it can happen ten years from now. But it very often happens. And we have gone through the ups and downs of that again and again and again and again in our companies. We know how it looks. So VCs are not your friends. I'm not saying they're your enemies, right? They are business partners who have their own set of interests, wants, and needs, right? And you have to recognize that.
Hi guys, welcome to the How I Raiser Podcast, the show where we get an inside look at how real entrepreneurs and VCs raise capital for their businesses. I'm your host, Nathan Beckard, and today's episode is with Itamar Novik of Recursive Ventures. Recursive is a San Francisco-based VC fund investing in pre-seed and seed startups, disrupting industries through the use of data and artificial intelligence. In this episode, we talk about anti-patterns, things that look good but that can derail a startup, how he started two angel funds, and how he used those to raise his current thirty million dollar fund. Edemart also shares a ton of tips for building a fund, including why you might not want to raise a fund, tips for raising from institutional investors, setting up your back office, and more.

I am absolutely planning on, you know, in turns four PM, I'm gonna shut down my office and I'm gonna head out there with the kids. I've got a thirteen and ten year old. I'm gonna wear my onesie and it's gonna be a blast.
Onesie. So what's that? What's the is it? It's
a unicorn onesie. My daughter, she's ten, she loves unicorns, you know, it's that age, so that's gonna be a unicorn this year.
Right. That's a good one. Yeah, my my kids are similar ages and the older one is fourteen, I guess. And she's she says she's too old for trick or treat. I'm like, no, you're not. Get out there. You have to do it while you can. So we'll they still have candy at fourteen. That's what I hear. That's true, yeah. Um, very good. I'm gonna be a uh A cop, a police officer, kind of a
Yeah, we need more safety on our streets. Good job.
It's kind of I shouldn't say it's on on air, but it's kind of a sexy cop. It's kind of like a Oh Send us a
picture then. Send us a picture. I wanna see that uh sexy cop going on. That's interesting.
Picture the the bachelorette party where the cop shows up at the door and then suddenly the music anyway. Uh we're we're gonna leave that. I
hope you'll get candy, not get candy thrown at you.
Um Cool. Well let's just talk about what you do.
