What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
You always have to be fundraising is the mindset. You always have to be engaging with new LPs. Like in our early funds there were small funds, right? Like a lot of high net worth individuals and family officers. Eventually, like, you know, your fund size grows and like you can't like even if they've had good outcomes, right, and they've made, you know, good returns, like things happen, the markets happen, family things happen.
Welcome to How I Race It. The podcast that goes behind the scenes with entrepreneurs who've raised capital. We uncover the tips, tricks, and techniques they use to get investors to write a check. Strap in and turn it off. Hi, welcome to another episode of How I Raised It, produced by foundersweet dot com and fundingstack dot com. Today I have Matt Ober of Social Leverage coming to us from San Diego. How's your day going? Doing well, no complaints. Good stuff, good stuff. Is it startup and deal activity pretty healthy down in San Diego, SoCal these days?
I mean we're a big uh defense tech, biotech uh city, so I would say not typically uh things that I invest in, but uh you know, there's more and more founders coming down here. Um you know, people get sick of the Bay Area eventually. I did.
Yeah. I always think of San Diego as just biotech, you know, life science. Like that's and yeah, Defense Tech makes sense too 'cause there's a big military base there, but is it still kind of the the epicenter of the the bio world in some ways?
I mean, yeah, I think that's what we're known for out here. Most of the venture f guys that aren't investing that space are probably similar to me, like there's one or two of us You know, we travel or you know. The nice thing about being in San Diego is I think if you give a founder the option of us coming to them or them coming to us, they're hopping on a plane pretty quickly. So sure. Uh We got a lot of founders that come into town.
Yeah. It's a nice place. I had two siblings that went to USD, so have a little familiarity. Um Good stuff. So what is social leverage? Maybe let's start with that. Tell us about the the firm and the fund.
Sure, we've been around about seventeen years, uh started by my partner Howard Lindzen and Tom Peterson. I think Howard's probably most well known for being the founder and CEO of Stop Twits, which is like the Twitter for finance. We're on our sixth fund. Uh we do seed stage investing, so Early stage, one to two million dollar checks, fintech and vertical AI is, you know, the majority of our focus. Um, four partners, two of us are here, two in Arizona. Um kind of all known each other since the very beginning. Uh we're probably most well known for being first investors in Robinhood, eToro, alpaca, customer with a K, Y charts, uh Manscaped. And um we also have a fund a fund that we did back in twenty twenty one where we backed uh nineteen emerging managers.
Uh that's fully deployed at this point, but uh you know. gives us uh you know a little bit of a glimpse of what it's like to be on the uh allocator side to the funds as well. Um Not something we're planning to do again. We're sticking to seed stage, but you know, never say never.
I wanna come back to that 'cause I have I have questions about the fun of fun and why you're not doing it and we'll get into that. But um let's stick with the current fun for a minute. Um Vertical AI. You said FinTech, vertical AI, like what what are some examples of vertical AI that you're looking at or I mean
listen, I think vertical SAS is becoming vertical AI and if it's not, the you know, founders in that space just aren't really embracing what AI is at this point. I think it's you know, it's focusing on specific verticals. We have a company called uh Newcase which does uh it's like a legal tech platform for the insurance space. So super focused. hard for like the L L Ms and everybody to win because there's a lot of proprietary data inside of insurance companies and the law firms that work with them. So that's very specific. Another vertical AI company, Tab Flows, which is, you know, very focused on uh helping uh
