Nikita Gill is a poet, playwright, and artist. She was born in Belfast, where her father worked for the Merchant Navy, later moving to New Delhi when she was six. Growing up in places with contested borders and traumatic histories with colonial oppression were formative experiences for the young Gill's creativity. Age 12, she had her first poem published in local newspapers. It was inspired by her grandfather's experiences of partition, and Gill was encouraged to submit it for publication by, as she puts it, the scariest teacher in my school. She later returned to Britain in her early 20s for a master's degree at the University of Creative Arts, working for a number of years as a carer and cleaner before starting to publish her poems online.
Since then, she has become one of the most followed poets on Instagram. Her work is infused with nature, myth, and female rage, and its admirers include Alanis Morissette, Sam Smith, and Khloe Kardashian. Gill has gone on to write several volumes of poetry and a novel in verse, which is currently being adapted for TV. She is also a number one New York Times bestseller, and the second installment of her mythological fantasy trilogy, The River, is out this autumn.
