We're living in a very interesting time where everyone wants to be heard, but no one wants to listen.
Bomb scares are not normal.
They're not supposed to be.
That's not supposed to be a reason you get a day off school.
And it's so interesting to go from a student to a cleaner because suddenly you become invisible.
It's when someone said the only reason it's not because of her words, it's because of what she looks like.
That got under my skin.

I am so excited to be here.
I think we have such a rich history of emotion and of the way that we understand it.
And I think the job of the artist and the job of the writer is to deepen our understanding of not just ourselves, but the world around us.
And I always say that poets are very much the emotive historians of humankind.
And I say that because history has a habit of being so clinical.
History will do this thing, which is, you know, it'll go in numbers.
One million people, for instance, in partition were displaced.
We become numbers, but the poet's job is to look at one family in that one million that was displaced.
Maybe find the littlest person in that family, the child, and then tell the story of the family through the child's eyes.
For me, there are so many lessons I have learned, but the biggest one is you have to take what you do seriously when you're a writer because your job is enormous.
You help people understand themselves better.
