I realized very young that there were two versions of the people that I knew at that time.

Now I know there's multitudes in every human being.

But when I was about six or five, I realized that there were multiple versions of my parents, for instance, who they were in front of their parents and who they were in front of us.

We're two entirely different people sometimes.

And because I learned that quite young, I also learned how to assess moods.

And I learned how to see underneath and the subtext with my classmates, for instance.

I knew when I was about seven that there were children who would come in very quietly.

And then suddenly as the day went on, they would open up.

And I knew there were some kids who just wouldn't open up.

And I knew that there were some kids who would get quieter as the day went on because they were going to head home.

And I knew quite early what that meant.

It meant that some children came from abusive homes.

And those were the people that I felt drawn to.

Those were the people that I realized needed to be heard.

And it doesn't really take much.

You just sit with someone and they'll tell you if they feel like you don't mean them harm.

You'll just listen.

We're living in a very interesting time where everyone wants to be heard, but no one wants to listen.

Listening was very important to me.

So I actually went to Kashmir before Delhi, which is very interesting because both Belfast and Kashmir have a legacy of partition.
