We were just saying in a couple of weeks, sport is going to go off a cliff in comparison to the feast at the moment. But we'll worry about that in due course. So you're off every Monday?

Monday is very low-key, very low-key. I would sometimes even do a little bit of work, but go for a swim in the sea, go for a walk, read a bit.
His Sundays aren't really a day off. He told me before he wakes up every Sunday morning, just worried about the legalities of what he's published this week, waiting for a phone call from somebody.

First, though, just a few minutes on a story which is very much of a sensitive nature, difficult nature for lots of people. So just proceed with caution. It surrounds George Gibney and, well, the abuse, I suppose, that people are familiar with at this stage. George Gibney was found guilty in an Irish courtroom yesterday, Monday, which is probably a day that's 50 years in waiting in a real sense. And certainly, I think in the country's consciousness, 30 plus years, people have been waiting for this day.
It seemed for a lot of these 30 years that it would never happen. So George Gibney, if you don't know the general backstory, George Gibney died. across the 70s, 80s, early 90s, was a very high profile and respected, I mean, it's jarring to hear that term, I know, respected swimming coach. He'd routinely be on RTE doing interviews or doing punditry. He had set up a swimming club in 1976, famous swimming club, Trojan Swimming Club. And in effect, and you know, it's a chilling thought, obviously, he was tasked with bringing through Ireland's best young swimmers. He was the swim coach at two Olympic Games. And it was only really in the late 80s that some of his victims started talking, namely Chalky White to Gary O'Toole, which got a ball rolling and
By 1993, he was in a Dun Laoghaire courtroom charged with 27 charges of indecent assault. And there was testimony from victims and the Supreme Court halted proceedings against him and said, in effect, too much time has passed for Gibney to be able to defend himself. So these were historical charges. He couldn't defend himself against them and... he got out of the country, went to Scotland, went to the US, where he's largely been ever since. So that is the Gibney story. And now we'll come into the particulars as to how it's all happened. more recently, but now finally he faced an Irish courtroom, an 11-day trial over the last couple of days, and he has been found guilty of sexually abusing four girls between 1971 and 1981.
So the four girls were aged between 8 and 15 at the time. Originally there were 79 counts charged his direction. He pleaded guilty to five of them. and not guilty to the other 74, the jurors were directed to return not guilty verdicts in respect of 33 counts. But crucially, the jury at the Central Criminal Court found Gibney guilty of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape.
