There were 150 Israeli fans across the way from the press box. There were also twelve Irish fans who made their way in to the stadium here in Debrec. Um lads a bizarre sort of evening in terms of the context of the game and a kind of throwback to Covid with the qu quiet, eerie stadium. Um the result on the pitch was obviously three nil but but there's a couple of places we could start here I suppose. Dan, firstly what were your thoughts?
Yeah, like definitely like sort of an unsettling evening still. And I I appreciate look there'll be a wide range of opinions of people who listen and watch this and and will will have views about what we should talk about and I listen, I I respect that, you know, and almost like a sort of an an element of plot twist when you have this uh sort of extraordinary performance from the Irish team after um you know what Hamer Halgramson descr uh sort of described along the lines Of the worst preparation you could could imagine, and um real sort of strange feelings around the whole thing because um you can't allow that to change, in my opinion, like to change your change your views around the event that you held beforehand.
Um, does that mean like a defeat would have been worse? I probably would have made that point in the build-up, like there's almost a degree of pressure, pressure on the players if you talk too much about. The importance of the match in some kind of grudge context 'cause what happens then if they were to lose? That's not fair. But obviously, like you have this sort of um really heavy win. Um and and yeah, like just I I say unsettling again because like that's obviously something that's existed around the week. Like the event um tonight, as you mentioned, the hundred, hundred and fifty or so Israeli fans, there was some Um questionable chanting, you know. I, you know, definitely some sounds and and were the subject of sort of discussions afterwards um from the Israeli fans who at the final whistle, despite losing 3-0, which is a you know a terrible terrible result for them in their sort of focus on the football context and some pressure for them at home, given how Ireland is perceived, you know, to deliver in this match, still treated like heroes after.
And almost this sort of show of patriotism. And as you mentioned, a couple of Irish fans in there, a couple of odd chants from there as well, too. I I couldn't quite grasp who was aimed at as well at the end. But I I I I think, yeah, like the whole day, I mean, this the strangeness of walking up to the stadium. I was a bit later up than you guys, and I think we'd heard probably in the last couple of weeks. Weeks, you know, talks at one point of a couple of thousand people being here, um, and it was deathly quiet and an hour and a half before kickoff, and as he said, a complete covert throwback.
