Bits & Bobs | Ireland's forgotten friendly, Dan's dentist trip, World Cup TV schedule
14 May 2026
Chapter 1: What dental issue is Dan facing and how is he preparing for it?
This is an Irish independent podcast. Now, you're welcome. We're coming to you on a Thursday. It is two o'clock. It's a pre-kend edition. We're going on a Thursday because I'm not here tomorrow. I'm at a wedding and we're going at two o'clock because Dan McDonald has a dentist appointment at half three and insisted we start promptly at two o'clock.
And so one of the few times I would say we've started pretty much on the nose. Will is here as well, William. Oh, Joe.
dentist appointment half three Dan hope it's just typical six month check in as opposed to something more serious no I need to get something taken out taken out taken out I have an alarm set on my watch now to go off because I have to take a painkiller an hour in advance so what time well I have to take it like an hour before so it's around 40 minutes into the into the show here so give or take I hear a sort of a rustling sort of sound it's like what's going on there
And what's happened here? Your tooth. Too much Fanta.
Yeah. Actually, your carbonated drinks, that could be the issue. The legacy of the... I can't even take Fanta now. I get too paranoid about it.
In case you're seen.
Yeah, it's terrible. And I'm talking about terrible main character energy. It's just because I got done on my own street. Nowhere is safe. I was up north recently and I said, this is safe ground, I'll have one.
It wasn't that you drank Fanta. It was 9.30 in the morning. It was a time.
No, but I just feel like... Chilling. I just feel like now you could be spotted at the wrong time. There he goes again.

Chapter 2: What makes Ireland a friendly country and how is it perceived?
And of course, nobody is actually looking, but in your own head, of course.
Which tooth is it?
So it's lower towards the back, yeah. And it broke a while ago. A bit of it broke off. I thought I could get by. But then I went in and it's just a bit of pain there or a bit of looseness there. And I went in earlier this week to say, look... I'm about to go away for, like, I'm going to be out of country for sort of like nine of the next 10 weeks.
And I was like, I was like, do you reckon I could get by till later in the year? And it was like, basically I was told that if you were on a tourist service somewhere in the army, you would just, you would be told to take this out straight away because you could just get up into the air at like whatever, 30,000 feet and then bad, bad stuff could happen.
So I'm going to be getting a lot of flights in the next period of time with the World Cup and so on. So the advice was, Just get it done.
Oh, really? The pressure actually would play out? What would happen?
You could just land as the hypothetical scenario was. Landing in New York would just like... Your face is swollen. And then you're like, well, what do you do? You know, where do you go?
As strong as a painkiller, you'll be popping midway through the podcast. Will you start kind of talking loosely and extemporaneously?
Exactly. The last 15, 20 minutes of the show could be a thrill ride. I feel like you two are holiday buddies.

Chapter 3: What viral hurling save has captured attention in the US?
How long will you be overlapping?
Oh, five, six days. Too long to not potentially meet up without it being rude.
It's really busy, yeah.
What's the over-under on how many times you'll meet up?
1.5? 0.5? Over 0.5. 0.5. You're not going to meet up? I think there's a good chance we won't.
Oh, yeah. I think, well, hang on. Why would we meet up? You're not friends. There's a slight difference. We're there with our families. We spend more time with each other. Also, he has a crucial point as well. Joe Malloy is a man of comfort. He has an all-inclusive thing going on.
Oh, you're shoveling the family off out to... No, no, he's not all-inclusive going on because if he leaves the property, he might have to pay for something somewhere else. Whereas, like, we don't have that. So we might actually go out to the town and have something to eat where you can naturally say drop in. But I feel like Joe could do that and then he'd be angsty. He'd be like...
The buffet is coming up around half six and I've paid for it already. You could meet up for the Champions League final. Would you not meet up and watch the Champions League final? I'm now back in Ireland for that.

Chapter 4: How does LIV Golf compare to horse racing?
There's the last day of the Premier League. Are you in for that?
No, you might be just... I'm flying out on the last day of the Premier League. I'm going to miss it. Come here though. You might catch up once. The issue is not so much that, albeit having to doubly pay for a meal would be you know, upsetting that I paid for a meal back at the place. You know, that wouldn't sit well with me. I can tell that's really the issue here.
But I can't just say, oh, you take the two kids, I'm just heading off to meet Dan McDonald.
I just have to bring the kids. Where?
What are we going to, what am I going to do with two kids in baking heat while we sit and have a coffee and just
gossip you haven't left I mean this could be really bad content but I can recommend some places like there's a beach there things you can do lounge your side by side I've got a one year old lounge your side by side with Dan what's he going to do on a beach bring him during his nap he can sleep with the bring him during his nap yeah take him out for a walk in the buggy yeah
Dan joined you. That's a crazy problem.
Yeah.
Crazy idea.

Chapter 5: What is the significance of the upcoming World Cup for the guests?
Though I started reading The Correspondence.
You spend the time with your kids, Joe. You're on holidays.
In bed, though. Like, I plan to watch no TV, not look at my phone. I'm just going to read. That's all I'm going to do is read. I started reading The Correspondence. Someone recommended it to me. Very, very good so far. Interesting. But, yeah, no. Screens free. The Kindle. I guess that's a screen. No, that's what I plan on doing.
Yeah. I'll see you there.
And spending time with the family. So we're a little bit light today on Bits and Bobs, we feel. We did a beefy football show, which is very good. Richard Fitzpatrick was on, has written some great books on Spanish football.
He was so good on this Florentino Perez press conference this week, which was such a 90-minute disaster that Perez then went on television the next night to try and repair the damage and then gave us great stuff on the inner workings of the Madrid dressing room. For instance, I just, I feel like it should be a bigger story. I didn't know that Jude Bellingham and Mbappe do not like each other.
And this is just a very public knowledge over there. So he was very good. And then he was excellent as well. Barcelona, Le Minimal, the Palestinian flag on the open top parade, you know, 18 years of age going so publicly strongly in such a kind of high profile way. in, I guess, support of the Palestinian cause was eye-catching for, you know, the heir to Messi and Ronaldo.

Chapter 6: How are the World Cup matches scheduled and what challenges do they present?
So all of that with Richard Fitzpatrick. And of course, we talked a little bit of Scottish football as well came up, Dan.
What a season.
Yeah. Don't want to go overboard on Scottish football because we have done it in a football show. But I know you follow this story closely. Since you were wrong when Will and I said that Martin O'Neill could come back. Since then, you dismiss that as nonsense. They'd be in seventh if they'd followed you.
I was assuming they were going to come back and be 15 points clear. The way it was spoken about, Martin O'Neill would come back and it'd be straightforward. It's amazing. They've been playing so badly a lot of times, Celtic, and they've somehow got there.
It's amazing. In just the games that O'Neill's managed versus Hearts, Celtic are 13 points clear. So he hasn't been that badly.
Yeah, oh, come on. Have you watched their games? like it's been powered by something. It's an amazing thing. Martin Neil just has this ability and it's very hard to explain it. So I was actually writing a piece about it. I was watching his interview last night and like he gave this line of, you know, whatever we lack and we may lack certain things.
And I searched that specific phrase in my Gmail to find like loads of the same quotes from 2015 after Ireland beat Bosnia. And it's all, it's very Martin Neil, like what we will lack. It's almost like, look what I'm dealing with here.
look what I'm dealing with whatever we lack we get it done I mean they've got four winning goals after 98 minutes and like they haven't been the better team in very many of these games but they're just there he finds a way to win there is something remarkable about it but like that's the thing like there's just this magic that's very hard to explain and my point would have been that during the caretaker stint like Saturday weren't even playing particularly one or two games in Europe where they look good but a lot of time
they're just getting over the line and that's what they've it's like it's not sustainable what they're doing over a period of time but it's got them to where they are now I talked to a former Irish player once off the record so I mean you know but what is you know the magic just that O'Neill has versus what does Stephen Kenny not have because Kenny was the manager at the time you know

Chapter 7: What are the implications of the Ireland-Granada friendly match?
It's like guessing who it is. I think I know who it is, actually. Do you? Yeah, I think I do.
Right, okay. I don't think you do. I think you'd be surprised that our paths crossed.
Okay. Let's stick with it.
And his sense was like... In many ways, it was just counterintuitive. There wasn't ferocious work on the training ground. There was just like this air of intensity and particularly the week of big matches. It was quite bad cop, bad cop. Yeah. Roy and Martin. What are you doing? What are you? What about you? You know, all week prodding. Prodding all week.
Not a very pleasant experience to be around. But come match time... The whole place was in a very heightened state and bulletproof. And like, are you ready to go now? And it was out the door and out we go. And you could kind of feel that in some of the performances, Cardiff away when McLean scored, you know, some of those nights.
And, you know, by contrast, it was like Stephen Kenny on paper doing all the right things. He's like, you know, and tell me about your family. And, you know, let's get to know you, the person.

Chapter 8: What insights are shared about Keith Andrews and his managerial achievements?
And, you know, it's OK. We're just trying to pass it out. If you make a mistake, that's going to happen.
It's hard to argue. There's no doubt that, say, under Kennedy, they did a lot more things around the hotel you should probably do, you know, in terms of like meetings and analysis. And I think even just how they went about certain things. But there's almost this intangible thing that's hard to explain.
And that's why when it unraveled, it eventually did just unravel because it wasn't probably sustainable for like a dynasty of like six, seven years like that. And then the profile of the dressing room changed and they came to a point where these younger lads just needed it, you know.
So that's 12.30 on Saturday. It's going to be an extraordinary occasion. I mean, I think that's the must watch thing of the weekend in many ways. Premier League goes on.
League of Ireland FA Cup final on Saturday Hurling Tipperary against Clare in particular on Saturday evening that's in GA Plus and Leinster Hurling is very lively at the moment with Offaly bringing some jeopardy into the equation Kilkenny certainly can't afford to slip up against Kildare we have two provincial football finals Ulster and Leinster they're both on Sunday URC final round
Ireland Scotland on Sunday as well on Virgin I'll be doing that game 28,000 coming to the Aviva Stadium on Sunday and then USPGA is ongoing as we speak Rory McIlroy's blister is okay everybody never seen so much coverage of a blister ripping his toenail off that was that was gnarly yeah my toenail came off the other week really? the big one He ripped it off.
There was a blister underneath so he couldn't get at it. I didn't fully understand that. The blister under the nail? Anyway, the toenail came off. I presume he got a medical professional to take it off.
No, he ripped it off in the shower. I saw his quotes. Oh, he just did it himself? Yeah. Did he? I think so. Softened it up with some hot water.
Golfers.
