Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.313 - 4.084 John Greene

This is an Irish Independent Podcast.

5.802 - 23.21 Joe

Hello, everyone. Friday, bits and bobs. The sun is shining. It's May. And look who popped in. Dan McDonald. It's been a while. Daniel. Hi, Joe. John Green. It's also been a while. You're very welcome. Hello there. This weekend is not, from a sporting point of view, as crazy as recent ones. You know, the Snooker and the Masters and everything else.

Chapter 2: What are the highlights of Conor McGregor's UFC return?

23.29 - 46.739 Joe

So, GAA, there's Provincial Football Finals Sunday. There's Cork Waterford and the Hurling Saturday. In football, League of Ireland this evening. Then... Well, I suppose City Brentford on Saturday, very much into Arsenal, away to West Ham on Sunday. Celtic Rangers on Sunday. Celtic must win before trying to beat Hearts. So, I mean, the Scottish Premiership is also where it's at at the moment.

47.119 - 67.623 Joe

URC, Connacht against Munster on Saturday evening. We'll touch on it if we can later on. Clayton McMillan's press conference yesterday sounded like a guy who's getting the hell out of Munster, is how I read it, to be honest. Just seems to be falling down around them. And, you know, the golf's on as well. The truest at Quail Hollow, Rory McIlroy there with the PGA Championship on next week.

0

67.703 - 77.157 Joe

The majors coming thick and fast. So that's kind of the gist. I will start with some emails. How is everyone? General hellos.

0

77.398 - 80.402 Dan McDonnell

What's going on?

0

80.482 - 84.308 Joe

I think this is a new combo as well, isn't it?

84.288 - 107.697 Joe

our first email our first email just this week DW had said enjoyed the return of Conan and Ronan last week more of the same please however I also enjoy the apparently ceaseless amount of available combinations you seem to be able to get into these studios are there any first time pairings still on the table big fan I think this is one this is one squad rotation at its best yeah

107.677 - 111.927 Joe

Yeah, you're my solskjaer and sharing him and I just want to throw you out there. See what you can do for me.

111.947 - 115.475 Dan McDonnell

I like that being put in a similar sort of age bracket there.

115.535 - 120.066 John Greene

Fun fact, myself and Solskjaer were born on the same day. The same day. In the same year. Wow.

Chapter 3: How does a robotic lawnmower change lawn care?

633.686 - 653.413 Joe

Fabian wrote in, I need to address, Will, Ashburton Grove. How did you pull that out? I can barely remember my own air code under pressure. And you're dropping the pre-Emirates stadium name like it's common knowledge. I haven't stopped thinking about this. It rattled me. It's genuinely one of the most impressive and deeply niche bits of knowledge I've ever witnessed. Fabian.

0

654.394 - 671.035 Joe

I also thought it was chilling level of sporting knowledge. A few people thought Eddie O'Sullivan was good this week talking about Leo Cullen's press conference. Eddie was just talking about how he thinks Leo's career flashed before his eyes and he was almost in a state of shock and he'd been there himself and just the stuff about how people love to...

0

671.015 - 691.744 Joe

Put the boot into Leinster, almost just came out of him. Sean said, how good was Eddie yesterday? Unreal. Coach's insight, coaching life flashing before your eyes. Impact on family. Overcooked the pudding. Wah, peak Eddie, said Sean. Eddie was talking about, you know, Leo Cullen's son left the match at halftime. Did you see this? So he just couldn't take it because they were down to 13 men.

0

691.804 - 708.992 Joe

And he was like, I presume I can't, I just can't take it. And Eddie recalled phoning home as Ireland coach. Um, when things hadn't gone well at the world cup to talk to his 12 year old son and Eddie said he had taken to bed with a migraine. Just don't understand. You know, you're a, you're a son, your dad's the coach, you're into the sport.

0

709.513 - 713.74 Joe

You're probably going to school where everyone's talking about it. You don't understand the effect on the family. It was great.

714.521 - 732.546 John Greene

You know, not. Not that it's consciously done, but the school ground can be a very cruel place. And, you know, if you've got a high-profile dad like that, I'm sure, you know, the jokes, which are probably meant as jokes most of the time, can really land. For sure.

733.006 - 750.165 Joe

For sure. One other email was about politics. So... Conor McKeown, have you seen him limping around? Conor McKeown? He did his ankle ligaments because there was, Bertie Ahern was out in a certain part of the house.

750.185 - 753.809 John Greene

He's actually, yeah, he's actually telling the full story.

754.329 - 762.316 Dan McDonnell

Full story on Sunday. I mean, I see Bertie walking around all of the time. I'm not even sure if he's even out watching the marathon. He's just campaigning in his spare time.

Chapter 4: Why do politicians attend funerals?

3120.539 - 3121.16 Joe

The working man.

0

3121.2 - 3135.857 Dan McDonnell

You have the royalty. I mean, you've got like, you know, that sort of voice of the common man, Rich Ritchie, like winning a Chatham, like the Gold Cup and the Grand National Double. It's not quite, you can't really sell those stories anymore, but it's just the feeling that the event is a bit more.

0

3136.157 - 3150.293 Dan McDonnell

But weirdly, if people ever want to get into racing ownership, and I will do it again, I'm on an extended break at the moment, but the most economic way to do it is to get involved with a flat horse. And that you probably, you could actually get a cheap flat horse

0

3150.273 - 3164.416 Dan McDonnell

that could be a flat handicapper that could probably bring you to some of the big festival days and some of the sort of... Even when we owned a horse, we got to the Curragh a couple of times. We had a winner at the Curragh, you know, which was an amazing experience. So, you know, it can't be done.

0

3164.556 - 3174.272 Joe

I just want to excuse Dan's ignorance. Bob Bollinger, 11. 11 years old. It's crucial. You have to give the ages of horses. If you don't... 12 on Monday. Yeah.

3174.995 - 3178.42 Dan McDonnell

They all turned 12 on New Year's Day.

3178.58 - 3203.533 John Greene

No, no, no. I have a good friend who has no interest in racing and he was a foot GA man coach all his life and I think he got involved in a couple of little syndicates in his late 60s and he absolutely adores it now and it's all flat and it's really affordable. Small little amounts of money that he's putting into it but one of them brought him all the way to Santa Anita two years ago.

3203.513 - 3204.976 Dan McDonnell

Yeah, I mean, that's the dream.

3205.236 - 3224.308 John Greene

I mean, that's the stinker of a race. But, you know, what you're saying is true. The other thing which I thought about horse racing just before you wrap it up was that part of the problem for horse racing is that... It's very insular in ways and how it views itself.
