Unbeaten run at Eden Park extends to a 53rd game and in truth Andy Farriside never really threatened ending it. Delighted to be joined today by Armand Eden Park, Keane Tracy. Keane, how are you?
Goodwill, I am currently looking out onto the Eden Park pitch. It's absolutely bucketing rain down now. It's been a beautiful day here all day, but it's bucketing down and I can see Josh van der Vlier is on the phone, presumably to his family back home. A forlorn looking Josh van der Vlier in the rain. You know, a big talking point coming into the game that we discussed in our preview was like, this would be a good test of where Ireland are at in the global pecking order.
If France and South Africa appear to be the top two, where do Ireland match up? Because the two November games, although Ireland had lost in the last two years, there was a sense that maybe they were undercooked, so this would be a better read on it. And if that was what we were going into it to look at, they were a good bit off New Zealand. What was your verdict on what unfolded?
Yeah, I think they were. I think you summed it up in the intro that they had a shot at history, but they never really looked like pulling it off, unfortunately. A lot of uncharacteristic mistakes, like some of the handling, which Ireland obviously pride themselves on, and the conditions were perfect, like I said, were just so sloppy. I thought the discipline... in both 22s was just appalling I think the final penalty count finished 9 apiece but it was the it was the manner of the penalties that Ireland were given away just really dumb ones that in the opposition 22 were just gifting New Zealand a way out and then in their own 22 they were just really punished and I think look I think they came up against an excellent All Blacks team.
I do think Dave Rennie has gotten them back on track. I know it's only three games and they'll face a much bigger test in South Africa on that tour that they're going on. Really looking forward to that. But I think they're playing with more verve, more attack. And I think a big thing as well, Will, which we can't forget is that like for Ireland to win in a place like Eden Parker to beat New Zealand, they need to be like at a nine or a 10 out of 10 performance. They need things to go their way. They need refereeing decisions to go their way. They also need pretty much all of their main players on board. And when you look at the amount of like starting players that Ireland were missing from this tour, like you just go through them in the back line, Matt Hanson, Tommy O'Brien,
