This is an Irish independent podcast. Hello, everybody, and welcome to the Indo Sport Podcast. It is the morning after the night before Ireland's game with Israel. Did go ahead into Bretchen last night. The Ireland team came out wearing black armbands. They bowed their heads during the Israeli anthem. Captain Daro Shea did not shake hands with his Israeli counterpart. There were about 150 to 200 Israeli fans on the ground. There were 12 Irish fans who made their way in after all. Um Um meanwhile we were all watching the game on the world feed, a very strange experience as a commentator, kind of pr pretended as much as he could that it was a very much a normal football game and there were no outside interferences in the build-up.
Um one person who was also watching on TV was Gavin Bazunu. He was in the team hotel. Everyone will know by now that he pulled out on Saturday from the game. There was a secret ballot about whether it would go ahead. Ultimately it did. And then the game kicked off and in one of the most surprising features, Ireland played really, really well. They were twin a little up inside twenty five minutes, Troy Parr, Adamita, Jack Moylam with the goals, kinda took the sting out of the contest, and then from then we were just waiting for the final whistle to see if anything would happen. Uh And there has been a couple of flashpoints subsequently that I'll get to. Um in a few minutes I'm going to be joined by Dan MacDonald.
He's in Budapest Airport en route home, ahead of game three of this window against Austria on Thursday. Obviously the weekend was crazy round and like the all the news on Saturday about whether it would go ahead, the Gavin Bazunu developments. Then the kickoff and kind of one of the one thing I actually hadn't anticipated is Ireland going out and like playing really, really well amidst all this as well, which added another layer of kind of oddness to the occasion. Um How did you kind of process it all?
That was something that struck me as obviously way down the ledger of relevance in terms of wider considerations heading into the match, but I had the exact same I would chime with you on that. it was hard to reconcile the fixture itself and then how Ireland's potency and how clued in they looked on the pitch was so at odds with the frazzled nature of the hours which preceded it. So just a very I'm sure we'll get into the details of but just a very strange viewing experience and uh A stark weekend, more broadly speaking.
Yeah, so there's already a podcast in your feed with Dan, Aiden Fitzmauris, and Sean O'Connor. They recorded uh sometime after the final whistle uh in the stadium last night. Uh FAI President Paul Cook also spoke to the media. He he'd been kind of a key figure behind the scenes, but hadn't as yet talked publicly.
