Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.297 - 5.304 Unknown

This is an Irish Independent Podcast.

0

5.324 - 24.218 Rory McIlroy

Rory, on behalf of the club, we always will celebrate your victory last year and the history you made by winning your first green jacket and completing the Grand Slam. Today, you have accomplished what has occurred only three other times. you are a Masters Champion for the second year in a row.

0

25.16 - 32.83 Rory McIlroy

Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the 2026 Masters Champion, Rory McIlroy.

0

Chapter 2: What historical significance does Rory McIlroy's win hold?

40.541 - 68.825 Joe

Rory McIlroy is your Masters Champion 2025 and 2026. On the podcast today, we're going to talk to our own Conor McKeown. He was there all week for the Irish Independent and also the great Jaime Diaz. Perfectly placed to give that broader historical view of just what Roy McIlroy is doing in the game of golf all of a sudden. First, though, a recap of what has been a long and extraordinary week.

0

69.425 - 84.529 Joe

The win in 25 was a roller coaster, 11 years in the making. The 26 version, well... The same, but of course, very different. Here is the winning moment on 18. Jim Nance, as ever, let the pictures do the work.

0

84.549 - 88.797 Unknown

Rory is a rare repeat winner at Augusta.

0

114.798 - 140.296 Joe

In 25, at this same crowning moment, you'll remember Rory fell to his knees in sheer exhaustion and relief and his body was heaving with emotion. He couldn't really catch his breath given the enormity of it all. On Sunday night, 2026, things were under more control. He stayed on his feet and screamed into the sky with a smile. Happy, ecstatic, no doubt, but more in control of it all.

0

140.316 - 160.291 Joe

He turned to Harry Diamond and laughed in a can you believe this kind of way and even the hug was less a collapse into Harry's arms and more two men back slapping in a way that said job well done. He walks off and gestures for his daughter Poppy to come in for a hug. And she does. A little bit shy, but she does. And there's a kiss and a hug for his wife Erica.

160.691 - 184.039 Joe

And then an embrace with his parents, Jerry and Rosie. Absent in 25, but greenside in 26. It's a good thing you came, he tells them. Now, we've known about the sacrifices of Gerry and Rosie McElroy for a long time, but reading the new Alan Shipnock book of late, for me, it feels very front of mind just now.

184.621 - 201.912 Joe

In a way I hadn't fully appreciated when I was younger, Rory's story is really their story. Because you think of the reality of their schedule when he was a child. Gerry worked 8am to midnight. He divided his time between rugby club and golf club, cleaning toilets, dressing rooms, barman.

202.313 - 223.389 Joe

And then when he got home late and tired, Rosie would leave the house for the night time shift in a local factory. And Rory has noted himself how little time they had together as a trio. And it was all to support their little golf prodigy and give him every chance against the odds. And in his book, Shipnuck recounts an amazing story told to him by Jimmy Dunn.

223.849 - 242.68 Joe

Dunn these days is a mover and shaker in the golf world. And he heard this story from his fellow member at the exclusive Seminole Golf Course from one Jerry McElroy. As the book details it, Rory's around nine years old. Jerry has made a vow he's not going to borrow more money. It's a Sunday and Rory wants to go to the driving range.

Chapter 3: How did Rory McIlroy's performance differ between 2025 and 2026?

372.055 - 394.685 Joe

His scrambling, his putting, his chipping, his wedge play on par fives. He was like an amped up Padraig Harrington back in the amateur days. Take the first two days. Of the 91 players in the field, Rory McIlroy was the second worst when it came to driving accuracy. Second last of 91. And the guy in last place was last in the tournament. Rory somehow led by six shots going into the weekend.

0

394.705 - 408.122 Joe

It was insane. Almost inexplicable. On Friday evening in the press centre, Rory went some way towards explaining it. Out of sight these past three weeks, not playing tournaments. Instead, he's been hanging out at Augusta National.

0

408.271 - 420.846 Rory McIlroy

I did a couple of days where I dropped Poppy to school, flew up here, played, landed back home and had dinner with Eric and Poppy. I did a couple of day trips like that. The more time I could spend up here, the better.

0

421.13 - 435.136 Joe

Now, I won't lie, that part about day trips to Augusta makes me low-level hate the man, but that's for another day. The first two days of the tournament, Rory was almost statesman-like. He was riding the wave of being defending champion. Nothing could fluster him.

0

435.156 - 455.732 Joe

His line to the media both days was, there's not a spot on this golf course I can't find my way out of trouble on, so I am just letting rip with the driver. That's my strategy. He said he loved that he wasn't steering his way around the golf course, that he was still swinging with abandon and dealing with the consequences amongst the trees. He only hit five fairways Thursday and eight on Friday.

456.433 - 477.1 Joe

Another un-Rory-like stat, also from Thursday, Friday, on the eight par fives, eight par fives across those two days, he was seven under through those eight holes without hitting a fairway. Not one fairway in eight, but seven under. Wedges and short game to the four. On Friday, he was asked what that said about his game these days.

478.02 - 480.683 Rory McIlroy

Becoming a wily old veteran, I think.

482.424 - 504.324 Joe

On the Friday, the six birdies and seven holes on the back nine was old school Rory. With, of course, a chip in on 17 included for good measure. That said, going into the weekend, it did feel a bit unsustainable. A six shot lead had a certain Greg Norman-esque infamy as well to it. And going into Saturday, the chasing pack were in the mood to chase, and that they did. Rory also went backwards.

504.765 - 527.226 Joe

His iron plate deserted him totally, and by close of evening, that beautiful six-shot lead was all gone, and he was back in a dogfight. What's more, as he walked up 18 on Saturday, I thought Rory looked very, very tired. A defending champion can only save power so many times. It takes a toll, and he had hung on for dear life in a way which was admirable, but again, unsustainable.

Chapter 4: What emotional moments defined Rory's victory at Augusta?

642.194 - 643.034 Unknown

Oh, it's too bad.

0

643.054 - 655.526 Joe

But then, inexplicably, and from his perspective, terrifyingly, he missed the next one from four feet. Oh, no. Rory. No.

0
0

656.688 - 677.808 Joe

It was a disaster. Double bogey, the pull left, the putting, and then another bogey quickly on six. And suddenly, Rory McIlroy was two shots behind and worse, the leaderboard around him was busy. It was cooking with lots of players going well. And at that stage, it felt like Rory was goosed. And what must have been going through his head on the fourth?

0

678.089 - 692.753 Joe

All that remedial work on the range and still, that pulled iron and the missed short putt. With 14 long holes to go, he must have feared the worst. In previous years, McElroy could have easily fallen away. But these days, he's a little bit bulletproof.

697.188 - 702.335 Unknown

Michael Roy makes his move in the right direction at the 7th.

702.355 - 722.301 Joe

Birdie on 7, birdie again on 8, the ship was steadied. And on 11, scene of a double bogey on Saturday, Rory made an extraordinary put to save par. It was resilience personified. And then, where better to take control of the Masters than Amen Corner? The 12th hole, and everything Gary Player had said about it just this week.

722.585 - 735.981 Jaime Diaz

Great example for golf architects to realize you don't have to make the holes all that long. I mean, look at that's an eight iron and it's crippled more people than polio. I mean, this hole is really, that's some hole.

736.481 - 744.911 Joe

The wind was gusting and between them, Harry Diamond and Rory McIlroy seemed to take an age. Then Rory pulled the trigger.

Chapter 5: What sacrifices did Rory McIlroy's family make for his career?

766.662 - 788.065 Joe

He stitched it and made the putt for birdie. Afterwards, in his press conference, he said that back at his very first Masters in 2009, Tom Watson had given him advice on how to handle the wind at 12 when it gets tricky. And he heeded that advice in 2026. The kid really had become the wily old veteran. He made another birdie on 13 and suddenly he was three shots clear.

0

788.545 - 805.833 Joe

He managed to play that 11-hole stretch in four under par and it won him the tournament. What's more, nobody was able to come for him. As Rory was birdie in 12 and 13, Justin Rose's round was unravelling in the most cruel fashion at the very same time. And it was hard not to feel sorry for Rose. He deserves better than what Augusta has given him.

0

805.853 - 828.626 Joe

Meanwhile, Scotty Scheffler had left his run too late. And Rory's playing partner, Cam Young, was stuck in neutral. He never made a birdie on the back nine as the wind picked up. Somehow, impossibly it felt, McIlroy was comfortable walking to the 18th with a two-shot lead. He could afford the bogey after a wild drive into the trees. Maybe a befitting way to finish his driving week.

0

828.646 - 850.141 Joe

It won't be long before he fixes that. Which brings us to the future. Last year, his press conference was full of emotion, and it felt like an end point. This year, not so much. The high is very sweet, but very different. You might remember his slightly cranky summer in 2025. He said he's not expecting a repeat in 26, and he was asked about winning more majors.

0

850.221 - 860.777 Rory McIlroy

It took me 10 years to win my fifth major, and then my sixth one's come pretty soon after it. So, yeah, I'm not putting a number on it, but I certainly don't want to stop here.

861.044 - 882.808 Joe

It feels like after digesting the win of 25 and dealing with the existential crisis which almost followed, 26 is now a stop on the road. And at 36, with his body healthy and his game in incredible shape, more complete than it's ever been in his career, and his mentality bulletproof, well, suddenly anything feels possible for Rory all over again.

882.868 - 900.454 Joe

This feels a bit like 2014 when he'd won his fourth major. These are the most ridiculous times for Irish golf, so breed them in. A very final one. He was asked about that sweet moment where you get to tap in and win the tournament. How did 26 compare to 25 in that moment?

901.156 - 926.28 Rory McIlroy

And in the moment, I think when the ball trickled by and I marked it there from, you know, two inches or whatever, I just looked at the back of the green and I give it one of these because I saw my mum and dad and Erica and Poppy and I was just like... I can't believe I've just done it again. So yeah, more joy, more like, yeah, not as emotional, but just, wow, this is, you know, it's amazing.

926.3 - 927.805 Rory McIlroy

I can't believe I did it again.

Chapter 6: How did Rory's short game contribute to his success?

1501.494 - 1520.438 Conor McKeown

And it's something that if you focus on and you're talented, you can get into your game. I mean, Rory was never yippy. he just didn't have very good technique and he hadn't really focused on it and he liked hitting the ball and and doing all those things that you know everybody loves about the game but once he said okay

0

1520.823 - 1540.151 Conor McKeown

You know, I, first of all, almost have an obligation to get the most out of this. Look what my parents did. You know, I shouldn't be just taking the money and riding into the sunset. And I think he really, truly loves the game. And I always thought that of him, even, you know, in his early 20s. He's always been a student of history, and especially Tiger.

0

1540.171 - 1563.738 Conor McKeown

I mean, he knows more about Tiger than... I know a lot about Tiger. I'm not, you know, in a competition with Rory, but it's my job to know facts about Tiger. For a player... He knew everything about Tiger more than I did. And I just think he saw in Tiger some of himself, or he aspired to be that way in terms of, gosh, nobody's ever had this kind of talent before in every area of the game.

0

1564.478 - 1583.199 Conor McKeown

And that's what that Tiger's, I think, his true legacy is that he expanded the possibilities of what a golfer could be. And I think Rory's following that in the continuum. There was going to be a moment where it was going to be the Rory era, and it didn't quite happen in the aughts. Not the odds, rather the teams. And I think he's got another shot at that.

0

1583.779 - 1601.404 Conor McKeown

And you could say it's ego, but I think it's more about let me let me get the most out of myself for everybody concerned. You know, so we all feel like, you know, all this luck that was bestowed upon me and all the pleasure you guys get out of it and all the support you give me, I pay it back.

1601.519 - 1616.693 Joe

Yeah, it's funny. It's interesting when you talk about that obligation to maybe his genius, but also you mentioned his parents. And this is where, you know, we can indulge in pop psychology and there's a real shortcoming in that for sure. But

1616.673 - 1635.728 Joe

it's hard not to feel with a certain sense of confidence that he does feel a great, great, great sense of gratitude to his parents with each passing year as he becomes a father. I think he understands the sacrifices his parents made, you know, and kind of the sweet spot of their adult lives. They were working just relentlessly for their little golf prodigy kid who,

1635.708 - 1649.805 Joe

may or may not go on to do great things, but they felt they owed it to him to give him every chance he could, you know, and Larry would kind of call him the cocky little fucker up north with all the best gear, you know, all the best gear. And because like that's hard earned best gear.

1649.845 - 1658.475 Joe

And so who knows if that's part of his makeup as well, like an obligation to do the best by what they did for him.

Chapter 7: What challenges did Rory face during the final rounds?

2216.792 - 2233.896 Unknown

Oh, it's a pleasure, Joe. The sun is just starting to come out here in Augusta and it is, you know, it feels so similar to this morning, this time last year. You can kind of feel the kind of atmosphere crackling around the place, even if there's no kind of visible signs of what went on last night.

0

2233.876 - 2256.936 Unknown

And, you know, everybody is sort of imbued a small bit with the mad energy of what was another extraordinary Master Sunday. So you followed him for most of the day, did you? Yeah. Yeah, I went out. So I suppose I went out in the range again. I've watched Rory a lot in the range this week just because he was clearly battling his own game. That was... That was the thing.

0

2257.036 - 2276.416 Unknown

And we saw him hitting balls on the range on Saturday night. He was the only person there after his round. And he was still hitting balls as it was getting dark. And it was clear that he was battling this big left miss. So I wanted to watch him hit balls on the range yesterday morning. It was so hot, Joe, yesterday at Augusta. I cannot overemphasise that enough.

0

2276.496 - 2293.919 Unknown

It was difficult to kind of stand in the one place. It was hot and it was baking. By the time Rory McIlroy got to eight, there was a kind of a very swirly, squally, hot wind and it just made everything feel so intense. Like Saturday was a very intense day at Augusta. Yesterday was different.

0

2293.979 - 2314.149 Unknown

But I followed Rory as far as four and actually it was so hot I went up into one of the grandstands on four and watched that kind of... great tragedy on four and some slumped down five. Um, and I had to kind of go back into the clubhouse, into the media center just to, uh, get a drink of water or to a couple of different things.

2314.309 - 2326.067 Unknown

And by the time I came back, it was just after the eighth and he turned his round. So I caught him on nine and then basically walked the whole course, walk, walk the rest of the, um, walk the rest of the round in close proximity. Yeah.

2326.047 - 2333.903 Joe

Because obviously his playing partner, Cam Young, couldn't muster up even a birdie on the back nine. But McIlroy said afterwards, don't underestimate that wind. It was playing very difficult, that back nine.

2334.484 - 2356.041 Unknown

Really, really difficult. Like on eight, you can feel it. It was blowing up that hill on eight. The glory hit that green with a driver six iron yesterday. And... like his body language changed totally after the birdie on seven. Like he was really hanged up and, you know, kind of slumped over and non-communicative just before that. And you see the way he pulled the driver on eight.

2356.081 - 2377.021 Unknown

And then you see the way he kind of, he started to bounce up the fairway again. He's such, I mean, he's so, he's so obvious in some ways, you know, his body language just tells you everything you need to know about him. And in as much as he's maybe the most potent scorer out there, you can only score with those pins if you hit the fairway. And he had not been doing that.

Chapter 8: How did Rory McIlroy's mentality evolve during the tournament?

2712.63 - 2723.119 Joe

We played the clip of him speaking to CBS and Amanda Baleonis and he wrapped it up by saying, you know, his third answer in the interview was, but look, I just need to get to the driving range and sort it out.

0

2723.099 - 2751.958 Joe

stare and she said yeah okay I'll take your cue and thank you Rory off you go so look the novelty had worn off but what's your sense of like in terms of the manner of this win and the extent to which it was so un-Rory like in that it relied upon all the traditional the traditional quote unquote weaknesses and I know his short game has often been underrated for a long time but in a sense getting out of trouble scrambling making clutch puts the chipping you know all of that stuff which isn't talked about enough with him

0

2751.938 - 2769.543 Joe

And has been a weakness in pockets of his career. Meanwhile, his great weapon, the driver, obviously isn't really working. And the iron play in particular on Saturday is not working. It makes it such an unlikely win. Like if we'd given you some of these stats, you would say, well, he must be nowhere near contention. He can't win playing this way.

0

2770.104 - 2778.115 Joe

It makes it his most, maybe not spectacular and eye-catching, but it makes it in some ways his most remarkable win, I think, of his major career.

0

2778.567 - 2800.821 Unknown

Yeah, it does. And it's a testament to a few things. One of them, I think, is the skills of his game that we don't spend enough time talking about because his long game is just so impressive that it's hard not to. But the other thing I think is his mentality. Because he couldn't drive it that well, he was under pressure then on his second and third shots. He had to get up and down.

2800.841 - 2815 Unknown

And he has those skills. All these players have these skills. But when you're put in the pressure situations, I mean, it's just, it's incredible the dynamic of Augusta National. Terrell Haddon went out and had an incredible round yesterday. Cameron Smith went out yesterday, couldn't get anything going.

2815.24 - 2831.921 Unknown

I have no doubt, no doubt whatsoever, if their tee times had been swapped, it would have been the inverse. You could score a round Augusta National yesterday. It was proven by people who played the course yesterday. But when you're in contention for the Masters, it just puts such a different pressure on you.

2831.941 - 2849.445 Unknown

Like we were watching this and at one stage, honestly, I was thinking, what's going to happen here if we've been here for eight days, done however many videos and written this many pieces? And Russell Henley wins this tournament, a golfer that nobody has ever, nobody has mentioned once in any of their dispatches.

2849.425 - 2870.742 Unknown

But you always get somebody like that who just can go out and play without any of the pressure. Like Hao Tong Li had it for a spell on Saturday. And that's what makes these tournaments incredible, is that when you're in that cauldron and you can feel the pressure and the reality is dawning that you have to hit this high tariff shot to win the Masters...
