Ladies and gentlemen, Chris Van Vliet!
Yeah! Van Vliet! Yeah! It's Inside with Chris Van Vliet!
Great to see you.
Good to see you. How you feeling?
Good. Yeah? Good, yeah. I think the big nerves are still to come, obviously, but... I think because I feel like I've got my body right. Now I feel a bit more comfortable, you know, in the beginning when I, when I first sort of realized that this was on the horizon, I think my biggest concern was my physical ability. And I don't mean like my ability to execute a body slam. I mean like my conditioning. And I had to, I suppose I should take it as a compliment that upper management didn't seem to have very much concern about that. But I was very concerned. And I remember saying to Ed Kosky, like, Ed, there's a big difference between physique shape and ring shape.
Yeah.
I only have one of those right now.
How did Nick Aldis prepare physically and mentally for a SummerSlam match after three years out?
But you look enormous. Well, I don't... Honestly, I say this with all sincerity. My focus for the last couple of weeks, or a little more than that, has been entirely on conditioning. Like, performance and conditioning. Like, I've had... You're not going to make a whole lot of difference to your physique in four weeks. Obviously, you can make some significant dent in your body fat and you can tighten up. But I'm not going to add any muscle. I'm not going to make any drastic changes to my proportions or composition or anything. But the focus had to be on being able to go. And I basically just decided, okay, whatever happens with the physique, it is what it is. The physique's somewhat there, so I have to be able to go.
But you've stayed in great shape over the last three years. Well, thank you. I mean... Great-ish. Look at the size of your arms. I understand. It's like a body guy thing. Because for me, I'm comparing myself to... all the people who have way better physiques than I do, right? So in my mind, I'm sort of going, well, it's okay, you know, it's not great, right? But then obviously, I do appreciate that compared to the average person, yes, it's, you know, significantly different. But like, you know, it's funny. I attempted fate when we were in Saudi Arabia, right? which was sort of when this whole thing got started, right? Gunther and I got into the big shoving match backstage. And it's funny because I had lunch that day with Abyss and with Sami Zayn and the food in Saudi Arabia is unbelievable.
Like one of genuinely my favorite things about going to Saudi Arabia. I really like going to Saudi Arabia. Um, I understand that our experience is somewhat curated, and I don't purport to be an expert on Saudi Arabia outside of the very nice hotels and resorts that WWE, uh, you know, is treated to when we go there. Uh, but for me, you know, I remember having a conversation with, with, uh, with Hunter about it when we were getting ready for a meeting in Saudi Arabia, you know, we're just having this like amazing coffee, you know, like this beautiful spread everywhere. And, you know, everything's like top quality, like, and I remember saying, I can get used to this, you know, but, um, The problem with that is the temptation is always there.
And I'd had lunch, like I said, with Abyss and Sammy, and we were like, they have these unbelievable dessert spreads. And all the desserts are like little sort of one or two bites type of hors d'oeuvre size kind of desserts. You've got creme brulee and cheesecake and lemon meringue, everything you think of. And it's just so tempting, you know? And I was just... And I think it was Sammy who said, you were so surprised that I was having dessert, right? And I kind of went, well, you know, that's probably the main difference between now and when I was full-time active, was like, well, now I allow myself a dessert, you know? And I'd had dessert with every meal. So obviously that has stopped. Yeah, but like I say, I...
As soon as I got home, I just fully just immersed myself in training and prep, you know, meal prep. Went to my local gym, shout out Just Be Fit in Whitehouse, Tennessee. And my buddy, Chris, who owns that gym, we call him Bull,
