Oh, there's more where that came from, I smiled than casually mention this or that. I was a soldier for twenty five years, and I am now known in defense circles for my globe trotting war research, teaching, writing, and public work. It is a life and career that has landed me in jeopardy a time or two. or twenty. Twenty times I almost died. Hard to believe, but here they are.
Tales of war, of travels in unsafe places, training incidents, freak accidents that could have happened to anybody, and a few that were purely my own fault. The good, the bad, the weird. All autobiography. But this is not an autobiography. These are stories about the moments that shaped me, about lessons that stayed with me long after the danger passed. And that right there is an excerpt from a book called Twenty Times I Almost Died. Life Lessons from the Edge of Survival. And is written by John Spencer. John is a retired U.S. Army soldier, ranger, ranger instructor who rose through the ranks for From private to major, served in combat as a platoon commander and as a company commander. He is the chair of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point, director of the Urban Warfare Project.
He is the host of the Urban Warfare Project Podcast. He's the chair of war studies at the Madison Policy Forum and the co-founder and executive director of Urban Warfare Institute. And with all that, he's also written scores of articles, case studies, books, including Understanding Urban Warfare, which is based on the podcast, Connected Soldiers, which we reviewed last time he was on the podcast, episode four sixty-two, and he also authored the mini manual for the urban defender, which has been translated into dozens of languages after it became a staple of war fighting in Ukraine. And we talked about that, as well as his time on the ground in Ukraine and Gaza when he joined us for episode four sixty three.

And you're uh you're still on the still on the On the road chasing war, huh?
Absolutely. More than ever, uh unfortunately, that there's a lot of war going on and I'm Just in the last month, southern Lebanon, Gaza, Kashmir uh w working on work in Azerbaijan as well.
Cashmere. Give me a quick brief on Cashmere 'cause that was a little blip on the radar for most of the world, but it was a big deal.
Sure. Um so writing a book about this four day war that happened between India and Pakistan, two nuclear armed countries in twenty twenty five. It it was a blip and it was interesting what the media covered from it. It's a massive actually war and exchange started with a A gruesome terrorist attack against civilians, singling out men, asking their religion, shooting 'em in the face in front of their family. Twenty six civilians died. India responds by attacking those terrorist locations and then there's an exchange between the Pakistan army or military and the Indian military. twenty thousand artillery rounds exchanged, hundreds and hundreds of drones. And then India kind of ends it by escalation management hitting eleven air bases across all of Pakistan, showing, look, y you want this to end 'cause we can hit you where we want, when we want.
Uh just got back from Kashmir though, one of the basically the field commanders, just amazing. individual and getting those first person experiences of what happened during those four days and there'll be a book about it probably next year.
