G'day and welcome to Kenti Blitz, your daily hit of NRL news. And Kenti, some big news off the top that you've got. A little bit of tension there between the Roosters and Sam Walker's camp. Yeah, look, obviously it was. We heard last week that negotiations had been put on hold until the end of the season and everybody was quite happy with that. The Walker camp, as they keep being referred to, was happy. And obviously the Roosters came out and said that they were satisfied by that. Trent Robinson said that he was... really content or really pleased as a coach that Walker had made that decision so he could concentrate on the rest of the season and their finals run. But he did throw that little, just that little jab in at the end, a little bit of sting in the tail there about how he was disappointed how the story got out.
To be fair to Trent Robinson, he didn't, get that detailed in the accusation. But he floated it out there. Now, the funny thing about it was, is if he hadn't said that, everybody would have just gone back to resume normal programming, so to speak. Okay, because they're going to sit down at the end of the season. But that little barb really annoyed the Walker camp, certainly within the family. Now... The Walker family. The Walker family. And their belief... And when I say that, the people on the Walker side of the negotiation, their belief is that it was leaked from the roosters. And it was intended to be leaked so it could put pressure on Walker to make a decision. And obviously the money that was involved, obviously it went up significantly over the weekend.
It started out at about 1.2 a year. I think it ended up about 1.8 a year or something like that. So they're annoyed by what's happened. And I think there's a little bit, my understanding is that they're a little bit tired of it. And I think there's enough there just now. I always thought it was a fait accompli that he would stay at the Roosters. I'm not so sure now. I think Papua New Guinea, he's definitely waiting for November 1 to see what Papua New Guinea are willing to offer. Now, they don't know whether Nathan Cleary will be locked up before then by Papua New Guinea. The word around town is obviously that Cleary is going to stay at Penrith, but he wants to go to November 1 to have a look. There's no doubt that the Chiefs, their priorities are Cleary or Walker.
Can I just pull you up on that, Kenti? We'd be naive to think that's clear he doesn't already know what he can get. So why does he need to wait for November 1 to have a look? I mean, if he's going to November 1. Because we have to put a date in somewhere, Woz. You have to put it. Otherwise, it's just a free-for-all. No, I get it. But the fact is he already knows what he can get. Like his guys, I know you're not allowed to, but his people would have already spoken to those people. He knows he can get X and Y. But he can't do anything until November 1, even if he knows he can't do anything. And he can't make a decision. So my point is if it goes to November 1, the good chance is he'll go. Not necessarily. Not necessarily because there could be some part of the negotiation that needs to still take place.
Third parties come into it. We know clubs are not supposed to have any part in that. But we also know that the Papua New Guinean government has made it quite clear. There's been instructions to many of the – the businesses around Papua New Guinea that they will be sponsoring the players as they arrive in Papua New Guinea. There's a lot of grey area in this, as there always is with player negotiations. But what I'm trying to allude to or talk about here is the fact that there is a tension now in the negotiations that we're not led to believe was there. And It's not the first time that they've been a little bit annoyed by what's happened. The fact that they believe that the Roosters camp – and look, I'll give Trent Robinson a leave past year.
I don't think he is aware of it. I think he genuinely believes it came from up north. But the Walker camp are adamant it didn't come from them.
