Chapter 2: Is Gears of War Reloaded coming to PlayStation?
Pacific, Greg's the keynote speaker kicking off PAX East, and we'll be doing a fireside chat with Final Fantasy and Expedition 33's Ben Starr. Then, at 2 p.m. Eastern Time and 11 a.m. PT, Greg's hosting the Mafia the Old Country panel with the devs. And if you're in Boston, you need to be there. But if you aren't, both will be streamed on our Twitch channel.
Remember, we're an 11-person business, all about live talk shows. Today, after KFGD, you're going to get Gamescast, which is about it being one month until the Switch 2. It's going to be a final, I guess not a final conversation, but a one-month-out conversation.
We're out. It's happening. Can you believe it? No, honestly. It was fucked up last week when we did the meeting. And you look ahead, like we do by weeks. Like, damn, you can already see the switch on the horizon. There it is. It's going to be here. That means SGF is here as well.
And then after Gamescast is the last of us new episode spoiler cast. Then the stream is an NVIDIA-sponsored stream of Cyberpunk 2077. Then to close out the day, Alien Covenant in review. If you're a kind of funny member, today's Greg weighs 15-plus minutes about how you failed him. How do people feel you? You won. Oh, no, this isn't about that.
Oh, trust me. First off, a lot of them didn't believe me and they'll get their own. They'll get their comeuppance. It'll happen. Karma. You ever heard of it? It also allows you to send invites and play with friends across platforms, like Xbox to PlayStation or Steam to Xbox. Greg, me and you are the number one Gears of War fans in this office. That's what they call us. We love ripping and tearing. We love ripping and tearing. That's Doom. I know.
But we got the Lancer. You got the Chainsaw. We're all about it. Are you excited about this? Is this something that speaks to you? No. It doesn't not speak to me. It's just like I was never a Gears guy. It's a very cool move to have it jump over. I'm more of, and I see the chat was popping off with it too. Why isn't it also two and three?
You know, at first glance, when we jumped in and we started talking about Gears of War Reloaded, I assumed it was going to be all three of them just bundled together. Like here it is, you know, the one definitive place to get it. Not that it's just Gears of War again, which is fine.
I'm not taking away from what Gears of War and the achievement it was and how great that was and how that really did change a lot of things for gaming. But an interesting one that it's not all of them. Granted, of course, you could sell the other two later on.
Do you think this comes back to how much work they're putting into it? Maybe it's a thing of, hey, we're putting so much into this remaster that we think that we can sell it as an individual thing to come around to two and three. One of the things that shocked me about this is the fact that this didn't come out with a trailer. So we can actually see how it looks in motion.
We have, Barrett pulled it up earlier, but on the Xbox Wire post, there are a couple of screenshots that show the 4K versus the original resolutions. And you look at the image, and it's like, oh, this looks great. This looks good. I wish they would have gotten a bit more into detail about, like, all right, so, like, you're calling this a remaster.
As we've learned now, remaster can mean a number of different things. Obviously, we're reading the fine print.

Chapter 4: How does cross-progression work for Gears of War?
Is it a remixter?
Because that's what I'm looking at with the second screenshot there, right? The first one is Gears of War. The second one is whatever they called the remaster of that. And then the one here now, Gears of War Reloaded.
And if I'm squinting my eyes, I'm like, Reloaded looks really good. Yeah. It looks really, really good. I'd love to see it in motion like you're saying. Yeah, 100%. But yeah, that's the thing that sticks out to me the most in all this.
It's an update of a remaster. It says Duck in the chat.
Well, you go through the bullet points here, right? If you can keep it on this screen because I'm reading from it. You got 4K resolution. You got 60 FPS in campaign. 120 FPS in multiplayer. You got HDR. You got the Dolby stuff. You got VRR, 4K assets, like everything. 4k assets actually is the thing that jumps out at me there where that is all you're, you're now putting in a lot of work into this.
Yeah. Good for y'all. And like, and honestly, like I'm with you that, yeah, I think it is. I would have rather them gone back and package this as a whole thing of here's a war one, two, and three, you know, throw four in there and they'll have some fun. But like, if you're putting in this amount of work into it, fuck yeah. Like I'm down.
Yeah. A hundred percent at a $40 price point. Not bad. You know, as we talk about games going up to 80, we talk about what we're doing right now.
of course game pass including it and all that jazz like is it the right move yeah why not like get this to more people again xbox has been saying and i think walk you know what is the conversation walking the walk right they're they're saying the thing and walking the walk right of like you know gaming is better when it's everywhere and we want to be supportive of everything so the fact that it's launching on playstation the fact that it's got not only something we are just uh you know very wary about with borderlands 4 right cross uh
cross-play, but also cross-progression, so you can take it to whatever platform you're on, apparently, with the Microsoft account. That's all great. This sounds like they're winning. I don't understand. Yeah, I saw some people mad about it. Even Wagerman here in the Super Chat says, it's the right move. Not sure why people are upset.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of Gears of War on PlayStation?
next year now and again what a great yeah exactly right i thought again when i knew there's gears of wars in the conversation i thought oh it's something about the new game and then oh no it's not it's this yeah yeah what are we going to get from that again i think it's interesting you know last week we talked about xbox raising their prices right and it was what pretty much a month to the day which i guess isn't correct because we're talking about switch but a month and a few days to their big press conference right
So it is. They're clearing out. Here's the bad news. Here's news that's exciting, but we don't want to spend that much time on it. And again, maybe this gets Gears of War a good boost of energy, a good boost of goodwill, and then you go in there and you talk about E-Day during the Xbox Direct at SGF or SGF weekend.
Yeah. Ring in another stupid chat. Volk Dasher writes in and says, so when are we going to just accept that Xbox is a third party pub? You didn't read this one, right? No. When are we going to accept that Xbox is just a third party pub? They are only Xbox Game Studios and Xbox Game Pass. We don't make a big deal about EA or Ubisoft or Sega. Xbox have tapped out the typical Sony and Nintendo way.
They've tapped out that way, but they're still making the hardware. They are still making hardware. There will still be a next generation Xbox. There is apparently going to be an Xbox handheld. That, again, is a different fight. They're fighting this war in a different way than PlayStation is. And so that's exciting and that's interesting. And again, I think it is going to work.
Will it work long enough? It's always, does Microsoft believe in this vision enough to hang in there and stick with them and let them lose money, quote unquote, do this thing, whatever. What are we going to do now with tariffs and a million other things? But... I've accepted that they're a third-party publisher.
I just think they're also making hardware to play their stuff, and I think that's a pretty smart move. I look at somebody like Steam, and I look at the Steam Deck, and I'm like, well, yeah, cool.
I think, for me, the difference... I'll get to you in a second, Barrett. Get to you, Barrett. The main difference is, when I look at an EA, or if I look at a Ubisoft, I don't think about the EA or Ubisoft ecosystem in the way that I think about an Xbox ecosystem. I think there's way more to it than Xbox being a third-party publisher. Can I call Xbox a third-party publisher?
yes but also like they're making like you said right they're making hardware they have game pass like if i'm calling them a third-party publisher that i'm calling them the biggest third-party publisher plus some right they're doing something far different yeah yeah i think like the war as far as the war right for me and when i look at it the war seems over at least between xbox and playstation directly right but like yeah there's still so much to it as far as what you want to build as xbox and how things uh still need to play together and how there still needs to be a
strategy that is way different from what an ea does and way different from what an active or i guess activision this is the same thing you know you're talking to nintendo in there right and the fact that we haven't considered the call nintendo part of the console warren forever because when everybody went straight nintendo said i'm gonna take a right and i'm gonna go this way and it'll seem very odd why we're not doing this why we aren't competing the same way but then you get to where they are now like oh they're in a class of to themselves right

Chapter 6: Are there potential remakes or remasters in the Xbox lineup?
You need to meet people where they are, and I think that's the big thing of it. This goes back to the conversation that I was having with Tim on the chaotic episode of KFC where everything was breaking, right?
Talking about the video games industry as a whole, and me pulling from a lot of Pierce's video, which if you haven't checked out yet, you should go check out, because one of the conversations that she was having there was about the video game market's ability to... and how that started to tap out a bit as it's become a matured market, right? Matt Piscitella.
Yeah, Matt Piscitella talked about it when he was here. How many more... how much more people can you get consoles out to that haven't bought consoles or that aren't invested in the ecosystem, right? Like, if that is slowing, then that starts to become a problem if you are looking at this industry or if you're looking for your business to grow.
And even when I look at, you know, cloud gaming and play anywhere and that stuff, there are parts of it that I look at that I'm skeptical about, mainly the technology of, are people going to be satisfied playing this way? The strategy of it, I think, is very sound and very... if you want your business to grow.
All right, maybe we've tapped out on people buying $500 consoles or $700 or $900 consoles. Everybody has a phone. Everybody has a phone. Everybody has a screen. We need to beat people where they are and get them into the ecosystem that way because we're starting to slow down in terms of investing people in hardware. Even like we talk about the younger generations and how like,
are kids buying consoles? Are our kids just watching streams? Are kids just watching people on YouTube play their games? Are they then investing maybe in PCs or something like that, right? Because they're seeing their favorite streamers do that. Yeah, I think this is the right decision and it all comes back to the thing of get your games everywhere. Put Gears of War on everything, right?
Like, if Gears of War Reloaded takes off in the way that we look at Forza Horizon right now and Elder Scrolls, for Oblivion right now, right? There's a new story later, I think it's in WeNews, of Oblivion doing incredible numbers. This is the third best-selling game of the year.
That's going to set you up so well as far as, all right, when the next Elder Scrolls come out, when the next Gears of War game comes out, when the next Forza Horizon comes out, you have this audience that is now...
ecosystem wide right worldwide as far as what you're trying to build you know that's gonna that's gonna do so well for you yeah you're taking the xbox brand to new places and i think in a time like you're talking about where we are a mature market where do you find those new places to go you have to meet them where they are yeah

reimagined remaster you know what I mean like I don't know you're gonna play it and be like oh this is cool but it's like I've seen a thousand games do this I think you would enjoy it yeah like I think you would enjoy it I don't think it's gonna like change you in any sort of way I'm not gonna come out of this being like oh it's my favorite game of all time have you gone to play Oblivion yet?
No, not yet. See, I think you're going to be in a similar boat there, where it's like... There's going to be a lot of nostalgia for it, and people are coming back to it, going, oh my god, I'm so excited to be there. And there'll be the new people who play it, like, oh my god, I've never gotten in, and this is cool.
But I don't know if it's going to... Yeah, I saw somebody ask, like, what was my take on Space Marine 2? I played it for one stream. I guess it's the same, similar Outriders thing. Like, I think... I guess for that genre of game, for me, it's a thing of it's a fun time waster. It's a fun way to hang out with people. But I don't think I'll play 15 hours by myself alone.
