So CJ, why don't you share that encouragement with us?
Yeah. So we're looking at Exodus chapter 23 for a few verses that are tucked in there. And just to give you a little context, the people have been moving through the wilderness, and they are headed toward their promised land that God has promised them. And he's basically said he's sending an angel before them.
Why does God say He will not drive out the inhabitants in a single year?
They're going to, you know, overtake that land, overcome the people that are there. He's got a special possession for them. And so I want to pick up in verse 27. along that line it says i will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter i will make all your enemies turn their backs and run i will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the hivites canaanites and hittites out of your way now this is the these are the key verses here now But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little, the NIV says, I will drive them out before you until you have increased enough to take possession of the land."
And so here we have the Israelites moving through the wilderness. They've received these hopeful words, this promise of a land that they would soon possess. But it would not come at the snap of God's fingers. It wouldn't even come in a year. It would be a gradual process, little by little. And we're going to see that there are some practical things for us to take away as well. But speaking of just practical reasons God said this, there are a few that come to mind here. And we see some hints there in the passage. But, you know, if the land were cleared of its inhabitants immediately... The lack of human maintenance would cause crops to fail and the land to quickly revert to the wilderness. Oh great, more wilderness.
We've just come through the wilderness after 40 years to encounter the wilderness. Now, you wouldn't want that. God has thought this out ahead of time.
What practical reasons does the host give for the “little by little” process?
Another reason would be with vast, uninhabited, uncultivated territories. Predators and wild beasts would multiply and pose a severe physical threat Not just to the people but remember they've got a lot of livestock with them as well and so These are very real issues that come to mind in terms of practicality the phrase little by little highlights God's method of preparing his people and And he gives them time to increase in numbers, become organized, and learn how to manage and care for their new inheritance. It takes time for the things that have to happen, that have to fall into place before they receive this promise, before they receive what God's told them they're already going to receive.
But it doesn't happen overnight. Now, for you mothers and fathers out there, Think about the preparation and the planning that takes place in those nine months of pregnancy. Not only buying and receiving baby items, but the preparation of your heart and really a nine-month course in maturity as you actually wait for this gift from the Lord.
