Like, of everyone on this team, If you're asking me who should be one of the faces of the next era of Sacramento Kings basketball, Keegan Murray is at the very top of that list. His contract extension kicks in this season, and with that extension that they gave him last year comes a clear message from this team that That they believe in Keegan Murray as one of the cornerstone pieces moving forward.
And honestly, they should. I know last year was a down year with the injuries. Started off before the season started. Then you had the ankle injury. But we've seen growth. In Keegan's game, defensively, he's developed into Sacramento's best perimeter defenders. He can guard multiple positions on any given night. Offensively, ever since his rookie year, I believe the shooting still remains elite. Defenses have to respect Keegan offensively. the moment he crosses half court. But what's most encouraging is the flashes we've seen of a more aggressive version of Keegan Murray attacking the basket, creating his own shot, and showing he can do more than simply space that floor. Now the next step for Keegan Murray is consistency.
Because Sacramento, they can't continue to treat Keegan like he's, what, the fourth or fifth option forever. At some point, if this team is serious about building a sustainable winnow, Keegan has to become one of the focal points of the offense. I'm not talking one, maybe the third best option on a really good Sacramento team. He needs more touches, more opportunities, and he needs the freedom to continue to expand his game. And when I look at this current roster, Keegan is exactly the type of player every NBA team is searching for. He's young, versatile, he can impact both ends of the floor, and he's under contract for long term. And those players usually don't grow on trees. And for me, the conversation is simple.
If this team is looking to build their future around anyone on this roster, A, it starts with that seventh overall pick next month. But Keegan Murray has to be second in line. Because there's no untouchables on this team. If somebody calls up right now and asks for Keegan Murray... If I'm Scott Perry, I would listen. But I look with Keegan Murray as one of the future pieces on this core going forward. Now let's talk about the rest of this youth here in Sacramento. Because if the Kings are truly, and I mean truly, trying to build for the future, these are the players that deserve respect. The real time. Neat Clifford. I absolutely love what we saw late in the season from Clifford. He brings toughness. He defends.
He rebounds. He plays with a relentless moto. And he's exactly the type of two-way wing every team is searching for in today's NBA. And for years, the Kings have lacked young wings with legitimate defensive upside. And Neek has a chance to change that. Offense needs some work. Hopefully he's working on that this offseason. But Clifford is the kind of player who impacts winning, even when his shot isn't falling.
