It's great to be here. My pleasure. Thank you, guys.
So how did this opportunity come about for you?
Well, I mean there's you know, there's there's a couple of times where a a coach could be wanted. It's I've always found it after coaching for over twenty five years, getting close to thirty. Um somewhere around that Thanksgiving to January one mark and then in the summer. And um you know, there's thirty two teams and there's always seems to be some movement at some point in those areas. And um There there happened to be jobs open. I think there was four jobs open and four opportunities. There's a lot of great coaches in the world, but only thirty two jobs and what might only be three or four possibilities. And um, you know, Los Angeles to me is just an amazing place to get the opportunity to coach. And so I feel fortunate that I was able to get a call with uh Ken Holland.
And then from there, uh, it leads to more calls and an interview process that you go through and hope that you can ma make it through the interview process and come out on the other end.
You've had a lot of success in more than twenty seasons as a head coach in this league, seventh most wins all time. A and now this opportunity brings you here to LA. What specifically about the chance to be here with the Kings was so appealing to you?
You know, I think I think like a a a general manager when he's gonna hire a coach, you ask a lot of people about uh a coach or you know, the good things, the bad things and you talk to people that have been to Los Angeles and played for the Kings and been a part of this organization and they they talk about the the ownership and the the willingness to to wanna win and want a an environment that's successful. um, you know, and the support that they give the team. And that to me is really attractive. Um management and Kenny Holland, I don't there's not a person in the world that says anything bad about Ken Holland and I knew him but not just to say hi maybe and to get an opportunity to work for a a general manager like that was really exciting.
Um I think there's great players here too. You know, I think that there's uh there's good veteran players, there's good youth and um an opportunity to build something.
What attracted Laviolette to the Kings organization and the city of Los Angeles?
And so there's just a lot of things um coming here. I always you know, being on the East Coast for most of my coaching stops and only one in Nashville, and so we could come out here, you know, maybe t once a year or twice a year. Um but every time I came out here I just thought it was beautiful. I live on the East Coast, I grew up in Massachusetts. And now I live in Florida, so an East Coast guy. Um but every time I came out to the West Coast, I would call my wife and I'd look out the window and I'm like, Man, is it beautiful out here in Southern California? And so, you know, that uh you know get the opportunity to come out here for all those reasons. Um the fans have always been amazing here um and to to be a part of that and get to play games and
in front of the fans that are here, in front of the city of Los Angeles, uh for the LA Kings. Yeah, what's not to like about that? So
Throughout your career, your teams have always seemed to find immediate early success, you know, in your tenure. When you come to a new team like the Kings, what's the first thing that you try and do as a coach to just instill what you want and get things moving in the right direction early?
I I think it's important I think relationships are important. So f for me I'm gonna I'm gonna dial in on that and focus in on that. You know, from the time I took the job just working through staff, it's always it's always a little bit overwhelming when you're the one guy that's new inside of an organization and there's lots of external parts where you need to, you know, learn their names and where they're from and their spouse's name and the kids and th and all of that.
