Hey Kings fans, Jared Chaffrin here for another episode of the Insider Show. Excited to share this one with you. We have two beat reporters who are members of the media that have worked with Peter LaViolette in the past, and we'll get to them in just a minute. First, want to say thanks to Josh Schaefer, who filled in for me a couple weeks ago in a conversation with the new head coach of the LA Kings, Peter LaViolette, alongside Zach Dooley. That was a great conversation. as they got to know the new head coach a little bit better after he finished his first media availability here in LA.
We also had an episode with the GM of the LA Kings, Ken Holland, before that discussing his process and the outlook for the off season, as he gets set to make some pretty big changes to this team here over the summer and get things going for next season. So we wanted to learn a little bit more about Peter LaViolette from some of the media that have covered him over the past couple seasons. First, Vince Mercogliano joins us from The Athletic. Vince has covered the New York Rangers for a long time and was there for both of LaViolette's seasons in New York, both The first season, which was a great start with him and the Rangers, and then a second one that didn't go as well. So we'll hear from Vince about how that went and some of his takeaways from working with LaViolette.
Then Tarek El-Bashir joins us from Monumental Sports Network in D.C. with the Washington Capitals. Again, another guy who's been a longtime beat reporter in the league, has covered the league as a whole, and has a really good sense of what it was like to work with Peter LaViolette during three seasons with him in D.C., as the head coach of the Washington Capitals. Joining us now here on the Insider Show is the New York Rangers beat reporter for The Athletic, Vince Mercogliano.
Vince, thanks so much for your time today. Great to catch up with you. And, you know, the Rangers, in an interesting situation themselves, a year ago, they made the move to move on from Peter Laviolette. They got Mike Sullivan. Now they're looking to make continuing moves as they kind of try to reshape their roster for the LA Kings. They welcome Peter LaViolette here a year later after he went the whole year without coaching. I guess my first question is more, you know, it can't be surprising to you that he got another opportunity after the success he's seen, the experience he has. What's it kind of been the feeling like after a year without him in New York and seeing him get another opportunity?
Well, things definitely didn't get any better when he left. So if there were people that were blaming him for the way that the Rangers kind of plummeted in his last season, I think it's fair to say that it went deeper than coaching. You know, there are personnel flaws here. There was definitely some friction with management here during his time. So while I think Lobby certainly has to shoulder at least some of the blame for the things that went wrong in his second season with the Rangers. I think there's a lot of other directions you could point the finger. And there's no denying that his first season in New York was a huge success. I mean, they won the president's trophy. You look at his track record, it seems like pretty much wherever he goes that first year after he arrives, there's a joke.
I know for Rangers players, I talked to a lot of them during that 23-24 season when they won the President's Trophy. I believe most points in a single season in franchise history and go on that run to the Eastern Conference Finals. Players were refreshed.
