All right, Kings fans, Jared Schaffran here with another episode of the Insider Show. Thrilled today to have Justin Williams joining us, fresh off a championship again for him with the Carolina Hurricanes. Justin, really awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time, and congratulations on another title, probably a little bit different this time, but still a phenomenal run by that group there.
Sure. No, it's obviously a different feeling, right? I mean, you win it as a player, you're happy for yourself, right? And you see others win it and you're happy for them. It's just a different kind of happiness that it was really actually awesome to feel just knowing what those players are going through and knowing what they went through to get there and then knowing the elation that they get when they finally reach their goal. And it was awesome to see and I was glad I was there firsthand.
Yeah, and, you know, on the management side, you know, obviously, like you said, such a different situation. But, you know, you guys had made some good runs, had shown some signs, had been a team that was in the mix, and then finally got over the hump there. Did you notice any kind of similarities to teams you had been a part of that were able to kind of get over that hump?
Well, I mean, a lot of championship teams have a lot of similarities, right? I mean, you know... Usually, obviously, you've got to have a goaltender playing at a high level. You've got to have a very deep team. You have to be healthy. I mean, that's one thing that a little bit of luck is involved in it as well. You've got to have a healthy team. you know, we went through all playoffs, you know, only, only maybe missing one or one or two man games. And that's, that's an incredible thing to do. And that's, you know, we're very fortunate to have that happen as well, but I kind of attribute it to a little bit to just, you know, as you said, just haven't been able to get over the hump. Right. I mean, there's only one out of 32 teams that went every year.
Right. So, you know, 31 other teams have tough time getting over the hump, but, um, you keep giving yourself kicks at the can and keep giving yourself opportunities to win. And, and, and, you know, I, I go back when people ask me about this, about, you know, Carolina about finally getting it and, and, when I played for Washington after I left LA, those were two of the best teams I had, I had probably ever been on talent wise and we didn't win. And the next year was supposed to be a step, step back for them. And all of a sudden they kept giving themselves a shot in the playoffs and they won. And it's just, it's funny how it works out sometimes, but you just got to get invited to the dance every year.
And sometimes you never know.
But Kings fans, I think, probably like hearing that. Obviously, it's been documented.
How did Justin Williams describe the difference between winning as a player and winning as management?
They've been in the playoffs here over the last couple of years, but haven't been able to get past that first round. Ken Holland, with an older roster this year, trying to give the team another kick at the can. But this time, Peter Lavillette, the head coach, someone who you're very familiar with, someone who you have won with. What do you think about him joining the Kings and having this group that they have right here trying to do that and trying to give them another shot?
Yeah, I mean, so for me as, you know, an outsider and knowing obviously Peter very well, it's hard to get excited for another team. Obviously, I have a ton of affinity for the Kings and my history there and all the guys in the organization and even Drew is still playing. So, I mean, I have, you know, a great soft spot for LA and I want to see them succeed and do well and do everything. So, I am really excited for this hire. Not just because Labby is going to LA, my favorite team on the West Coast. He's a good friend and he's going to be... He's going to have a great showing there.
