Why does feeling ignored trigger intense over‑thinking and anxiety?
They haven't replied yet. Maybe they're busy, but what if they're not? Did I say something wrong? Was that last message awkward? Should I have worded it differently? Are they upset with me? Have I annoyed them? Why are they replying to other people and not me? I saw them go on social media. Welcome to Lessons in Overthinking and Obsessing. For an overthinker, being ignored isn't just about not getting a response. It's also about the discomfort and the uncertainty that comes with it. The mind starts filling in blanks, replaying conversations, analyzing everything, searching for answers. A delayed reply from someone else can send you into a spiral. coming up with different explanations, usually leaning towards a worst case scenario.
And in many cases, the longer the silence lasts or the longer you feel like you're being ignored, the louder the questions become. The more uncertain or ambiguous a situation is, the louder it becomes. Maybe the more you like someone, the louder it becomes. It's not just the silence itself that hurts the most. It's the endless cycle of what if, the way it pulls you out of living in the moment, the way you feel so stuck in your head. This episode is for anyone who is feeling ignored or gets triggered by feeling ignored. And this is about supporting you to get out of your head, back into your life, to move back towards what makes you happy. So coming up in this episode, we're going to talk about why being ignored sends us spiraling.
And I'll share some guidance on how to not lose yourself, how you can stay true to yourself and When you are feeling ignored by someone, how you can stay in the moment, stay focused on your life, on what lights you up, on who you are. This is about not losing yourself. I'm Carly-Anne, I'm a therapist and coach. If your mind feels busy, fixated or impossible to switch off, this space is for you. I work with people whose minds get stuck in loops, replaying conversations, rereading texts or mentally preparing for things that haven't happened yet. Using a modern CBT approach, I help you break free from cycles with practical tools, compassions, and genuine psychological insight. And this podcast is not a replacement for therapy.
This is what I have learned. This is insights. This is what interests me. This is research-based. It's really a place for overthinkers to come together and learn and practice and get out of your own head. As you probably know, and I assume we've all experienced on different levels, being ignored really happens in different ways. We're talking here about subtle signs that are probably quite ambiguous and you're unsure. Other times it might become more obvious, times where it's through a pattern of unanswered messages or cancelled plans or being left out of certain activities or all activities. And then at the most direct level is when you know for sure that someone is clearly choosing not to engage with you, is ignoring you when you speak repeatedly, not
responding despite seeing your messages or responding to others whilst excluding you but with this we're kind of looking at this one when it's direct where there is more certainty maybe you've had a conversation maybe you've had a falling out maybe they have told someone else and and it's a trusted source the main difference is that the subtle forms can be uncertain and open to interpretation that ambiguity like i say while direct forms leave pretty much little doubt that someone's ignoring you. Now, if you're someone who struggles with a negative self perception, or you put yourself down, or you have a loud self, inner self critic, Be mindful here because you might be believing thoughts that are telling you they're definitely ignoring me.
So I'm trusting that you can kind of decipher that difference. But yeah, when we're thinking about this, it hits a pain spot still, but sometimes it's subtle and sometimes it's very direct. Most people are affected by being ignored. This is not just a you problem. Being ignored gives us an icky feeling for sure. I am going to say at this point that most people are affected by being ignored, right?
