Before we get into anything else, I wanna give you a little update on the EU Kids Act. It's um it's nothing to do with young goats, it's children actually, when they say kids. And access to social media, something we've often talked about on this show. And and uh all politicians in this country, well all politicians in government have been added. We can't do anything until the EU Act. We've got to do this as a block, everybody together. Together. And this usually in the face of calls for an outright ban and things like that on on kids accessing social media under the age of sixteen.
So the EU have finally acted as a block. It's all going to be revealed in detail tomorrow, but it's leaked today and the early assessments are out. A cop out is how one MEP, Sean Kelly, described it. But listen, is is it a cop ed? I'll tell you what's in it and then you can decide and let me know. So the four main things uh in this EU Kids Act a total ban on children under the age of three on social media. Thank God for the EU. Well uh finally the scourge of two year olds on TikToks has been dealt with. Anyway, a total ban on children under the age of three. For kids age three until thirteen, they can go on social media, but only child friendly versions of social media uh apps or platforms. No definition of what that means, but child friendly versions.
Thirteen to fifteen, they can go on social media, but they need parental consent. Now, is that just a box you tick? Like, yes, I've read the terms and conditions. We don't know. No explanation. And age fifteen to eighteen, they can Do what they want without parental consent, but the platforms have to be safe by design. That's their language. Again, no explanation. So
How does the EU Kids Act propose to restrict social‑media access for children?
In practical terms, I mean look, it falls very, very short of an outright ban on accessing social media for everybody under sixteen. That's what some people here had been calling for. So it falls very short on that. We don't know a lot. We don't know what child friendly means for four year olds who, according to this, are allowed to have their own social media. Um uh as long as it's child friendly, we don't know what that means. We don't know about the parental consent, we don't know about safe by design. Uh we We don't know how it's gonna be enforced. Is it gonna be up to the social media companies? And if they don't enforce it or they fall short, uh how they're going to be punished. And there's no mention whatsoever at this point.
We only have some leak details, but no mention at this point of the algorithm and how that works in the future. And remember, I mean, it's the algorithm that pushes all of that toxic content, that bombards you with things about anorexia or self harm or things like that. So It begs the question. If the aim is to make children safer online, which is the aim Does this cut the mustard? Will it make children safer? And if not, will what will rather what will make them safer? Is it an outright ban? I know it's tempting to say yes, but looking at some of the early results from Australia, I'm not sure if it's actually working over there. So will this make kids safer online? If not, what will make kids safer online?
