Chapter 1: What narratives are the Married At First Sight cast trying to rewrite?

0.031 - 20.568 Host

Hello and welcome back to the Maths20 podcast and in today's episode we're going to be talking about narratives, how cast members are now not so subtly attempting to rewrite their narratives and the 20 million dollar lawsuit which could soon change reality television. Forever.

Often when it comes to editing reality television, producers are faced with this internal question of how much can I morally manipulate this footage so it's not entirely accurate but makes a better television. But very soon, with what's now happening, the question they face may be, how much can I legally now manipulate this footage? And you know what, guys? I love this shit.

All this inner workings of the media and production and just exposing it all, I've realized is like a drug to me. And guys, I am addicted. Some of you may recall about three weeks ago now, I did a podcast talking to a lady called Lisa Galloway. And she was the founder and creative director of... Hold on a sec. You know what happens?

I get so excited in those intros that I'm trying to talk faster and I'm literally out of breath. So yes, Lisa is the founder and creative director of The Femi Agency. And that's a social media and brand management agency. And when I spoke to her... She gave me her insights into what we'll likely see next from the cast now the show's over, like over these few months now.

And the point of that chat was discussing like the potential brand deals that some of them could get and the money that could be made if they're able to become influencers or media personalities or whatever they want to do. And Lisa said something fascinating to me during that interview.

116.679 - 131.417 Host

And she said that before we see any of that, you know, before any big business moves or brand collabs, something will happen first. And that will be the cast will all now attempt to rewrite their narratives.

132.138 - 157.478 Unknown

I think what we're going to see now is people are going to go into damage control. I think it was kind of actually quite obvious watching the after show with Alyssa last night, where... The tone was very different, and I think we've started to see intervention from third parties trying to sway the public perception in a different direction. The problem is, though, is at least acutely,

157.627 - 175.99 Unknown

they're not going to have brands being like, yes, we want to work with you. Because again, brands, when they're looking to work with someone, they are, they're looking through their comments, they're looking through their engagement. And if they can see quite clearly that an audience does not agree with them or their behavior, they're not going to work with them.

175.97 - 199.581 Host

Listening to that back now, which is just three weeks after Lisa said it on this podcast, is wild to me because of how much this is already happening and just how blatant it is to the point it's kind of shameless and laughable. And I've got some examples to present to you of this later in this podcast. But before I get to all of that, which, trust me, is...

Chapter 2: How does the $20 million lawsuit impact reality television production?

322.588 - 340.039 Host

Do I like this girl? And the narrative of him equal bad now had all these layers to it. And we, the viewer, were then asking ourselves like, well, is he that bad? And it challenged us, which is what producers want. their narratives to do because that keeps us engaged as viewers.

And then the end of Historiak was him becoming a changed man and proving our judgments for wrong and he's actually a decent guy. But as we all know, and as I've discussed a lot on this podcast, that was all fake. Chris didn't change in the slightest. He was on the show for three weeks. You can't change your entire personality and outlook on the world. In three weeks.

And his ending was highly manipulated and pretty much just manufactured by producers. And they had to completely cut out that huge fight we've since learned about, which happened during the second dinner party, which was his final dinner party where he was raging at Alyssa and he almost punched on with David. Because if...

They included that, which to me is a huge scene telling of someone's character and should have been included. But if they did include that, it would have ruined the narrative the producers had decided for him and his story arc of start, middle, and end. And this is where this whole narrative thing gets interesting.

Because on shows like Married at First Sight, the contracts that the cast members sign are which I've read previously, not for a couple of years, but I believe it's pretty much the same every year, they have a clause in them that says, like, any footage of them, audio of them, their face, image, everything can be used however producers want. Like, they have... zero control.

429.462 - 453.837 Host

And when the cast members skim over that and sign the contract, they usually overlook that clause because they think very naively, well, that's fine because I'm going to behave good because I'm a good person. And if I do fuck up, I'll just apologize and viewers will see that and all will be good. But what they don't realize when they have this mindset is producers will pick and choose

453.918 - 477.006 Host

what they air. And as we saw with Chris, like they purposely left out that huge scene that would have shown him in the worst possible light as it didn't fit with the narrative they wanted. Anyway, I'll now stop recapping things we kind of already know about. And I will talk about this lawsuit that's happening in the UK right now, all around their latest

476.986 - 500.378 Host

season of i'm a celebrity and trust me this is wild and this really could just change the future of reality television as we know it what i don't stand on is someone being abusive aggressive and intimidating well i don't hang on i don't stand on it you were there you had front row seat i get it and that's what i want to come to show none of that

500.358 - 525.881 Host

In the UK for the last, I'd say, 15 years, I'm a Celebrity has been their biggest show year in, year out. And at its peak, it was pulling in about 18 to 20 million viewers an episode. And it has just consistently rated like crazy. And it's so big. that they've now started doing a second season every year, which surprisingly is pre-recorded.

Chapter 3: What does the term 'narrative' mean in the context of reality TV?

1252.68 - 1276.454 Host

An article by Pedestrian on Friday showed me just how shameless this has become and just laughable. And the headline read... Math's 2026 villain, Gia, is being eyed up for a major reality television reboot. And then obviously I clicked it thinking, oh, no way, like what show is she going to be on?

0

1276.875 - 1305.494 Host

The article read, if you thought you could easily forget about this year's Married at First Sight cast now the season is over, think again, because the industry is still completely fixated on one person. According to multiple insiders, Channel 9 is already working overtime to lock her into a comeback, and they're not being subtle about it. They're actively trying to find the right format for her.

0

1306.174 - 1332.956 Host

She's at the top of every list when it comes to casting big personalities, one source told Pedestrian, adding that Gia might be the most valuable contestant to come out of the Mavs franchise in years. However, while Nine might be leading the charge, multiple networks are reportedly in early discussions about securing Gia before someone else does. So where could she land?

0

1333.636 - 1362.893 Host

All signs are pointing towards a potential reboot of The Celebrity Apprentice, which last aired in 2022. They think she could carry a reboot. She gets people talking and right now that's everything, the source said. If she nails the right now, audiences could see a completely different version of her. Whew! And brave! Now, don't get me wrong. I like Pedestrian as an outlet.

0

1362.993 - 1389.233 Host

I'm on there every day. I'm reading it. And I don't want to shit on anyone's work as journalists, bloggers, whatever. We're all out there making a living. And we all are, especially people working for outlets like that, there's a requirement you have to get clicks with your stories. But I have to say... With that one, I just don't think any of it is true.

1389.734 - 1411.898 Host

And when it says, like, across the media, everyone's fixated with her, again, it's just not true. Well, I'm in the media. I've got my friends, you know, in radio, podcasting, TV, and, you know, we're all in group chats. We all talk pretty much daily. And, like, not one person is fixated by her. I can tell you, like...

1412.215 - 1434.24 Host

Every year, actually, the media as a whole, they now move on from the maths cast just quicker than ever. And, you know, like a few years ago, those cast members would have at least 12 months of guaranteed articles and interests until the next season starts. But like now, especially for this year's cast, it's already fizzling out a month later. And it's...

1434.22 - 1452.212 Host

You know, the article going on to say Gia might be the most valuable contestant to come out of the franchise in years and Nine are apparently working so hard to lock her into something again. I just don't think that's true because over the last three months, everyone I know at Nine

1452.192 - 1475.027 Host

They've all just told me the way Gia attempted to construct her own narrative soul season while playing everyone off each other and working with the press and leaking things and staging paparazzi stuff and quitting the show and coming back and quitting again and coming back and then actually then spoiling her ending of the storyline with Scott by selling the story of her new relationship like...
