I love the people of this nation, the culture, the warmth, and their willingness to learn. The majority of the employees here were illiterate when they started employment, but that changed due to the investment in the people. I helped set up schools to improve their verbal and written skills, not only in English, but also the local official language. I woke up each day ready to tackle the challenge, see the staff develop, especially the women learning and gaining independence, and see the company flourish, becoming profitable. The rewards were amazing. Because the company was very profitable, it needed to be sold as a going venture to investors in the country. This was a part of the agreement with the CDC, or the Commonwealth Development Corporation, as well as the International Monetary Fund, who, up until that point, were our bosses.
The sale included a clause that assured the continued employment of the local employees for 18 months after the sale. The order books were full. The bank balance was healthy on the day that the new owners came in. The new owners have their headquarters in Southeast Asia. New CEO Neil and CFO Bill come in, and soon after, trouble begins. Their first order of the day was to remove the majority of the previous management and bring in their own team. I was told in no uncertain terms that, as a female, I should be home breeding and not working, that my time in this company was up. Well, the company starts losing money within two quarters. This new team started blaming the local employees as the reason for the losses.
Head office sends over our consultant, Ed, to be an observer, to offer feedback, figure out solutions, and to find out what the root cause of the loss was. Ed was empowered to act on behalf of the group's CEO in Southeast Asia, a fact that's going to be important for later. Now, I had to go on medical leave for about eight weeks at this time. While on medical leave, the CEO makes a decision to cut off my kid's free private education and no more free utilities or food allowance without any sort of adjustment. So, in a time where I wasn't working, I went from being well-rewarded for the job to having to manage with a reduced salary that was only 100 US dollars, as well as pay for private school and all other household costs that were previously incorporated into my contract.
