Welcome to Master Your Money, Budgeting, Saving, and Debt-Free Living. I'm your host, Nate Tanner. On this show, we use the Trigator philosophy to help you build a spending plan that fits your life, build your savings and investments, and knock out debt with confidence. And today we're stepping into a new chapter.

What does 'life after debt' mean and why is it the new starting point?

Nate Tanner 0:32
If you've been following the Trigator Triangle, budget, save, pay off debt, you've probably been laser focused on the last side, crushing your debt. And now you did it. You paid it off. You own your paycheck. So now what? We're calling this one Life After Debt because financial freedom isn't the finish line. It's the starting point. In this episode, we'll explore how to transition the Trigator Triangle from security to wealth, what to do with your freed up money now that it's not going to creditors, the difference between peace of mind funds and wealth funds and why you need both, a crash course on cash flow and passive income without the hype, and how to avoid lifestyle creep so you don't end up right back where you started.
Nate Tanner 1:19
Because here's the truth, when you own your paycheck, you own your future, and it's time to lead it with purpose. Let's dive in. This is where the fun begins. Like I said yesterday, this is where the fun begins, and I mean it, because you've done something incredible. You've paid off your debt, you've wrestled the beast, you've broken the chains, and now every dollar you bring home is yours. If you are in the debt payoff season of your plan, take a moment and envision this accomplishment. No creditors, no monthly payments, no more stress about due dates or interest rates.

How do you mentally celebrate paying off debt and own your paycheck?

Nate Tanner 2:02
Just you, your paycheck, and a whole lot of possibility. Don't just see yourself, mentally time travel there. How does it feel? What are you going to do to celebrate? As Jacques said in The Simpsons, caress it, experience it. Quite smooth, eh? Now let's pause and acknowledge that. The emotions you're feeling, they're real. Relief, pride, maybe even a little disbelief. You've earned a celebration. So go ahead and do your happy dance. Take the victory lap and treat yourself to that guilt-free latte. But here's where it really gets fun. You know how we always say, give every dollar a job? Well, guess what? Your debt dollars just got a promotion. They're not just workers anymore, they're managers. And their new job, to hire more workers.
Nate Tanner 2:57
That's right, the money you used to throw at credit cards, car loans, or student debt, it's now your most powerful tool for building wealth. It's no longer about survival, it's about strategy. And that shift from paying off the past to building the future, that's what this is all about. from security to wealth let's talk about that shift when you're in debt your financial focus was security you were plugging leaks patching holes and trying to keep the ship afloat every dollar had one mission stop the bleeding but But now, you're not just afloat, you're sailing. And it's time to change your mindset from defense to offense.

How should you shift your mindset from financial security to building wealth?

Nate Tanner 3:43
Security is about protecting what you have. Wealth is about multiplying it. Security is saving for emergencies. Wealth is investing for opportunities. Security is peace of mind. Wealth is freedom of choice. And here's the key, you don't abandon security, you build on it. You keep your peace of mind fund strong, you keep budgeting by paycheck, but now you start assigning dollars to wealth funds, accounts and assets that grow, compound, and eventually work harder than you do. this is the moment where your money stops being reactive and starts becoming proactive it's the difference between saying i hope i can retire someday and i'm building a future where i choose when and how i work this is the difference between i can't afford that and does this align with my mission
Nate Tanner 4:39
It all starts with how you reassign those newly freed dollars. So in the next section, we're going to break that down. What to do with your extra money, how to balance peace of mind with wealth building, and how to make sure your money is working as hard as you are.
